4 volumes, 12mo, pp. viii, 278; viii, 279; viii, 255; viii, 278; contemporary ownership signature of Jane Abercrombie in each volume; full contemporary sheep, red morocco labels on gilt-decorated spines; joints cracked, spine ends lightly chipped, old ribbon bookmarks (separated, but present), vols. 1 and 2 with vertical cracks on spine, 2 or 3 signatures sprung; a good set, still pretty. Issued as a weekly folio every Thursday from January 31, 1754 through September 30, 1756 in a total of 140 numbers. Among the contributors were Thomas Warton and William Cowper. Johnson was critical of the Connoisseur for its want of matter. One essay appeared in each issue "aimed at the vices and follies of the community . It was often in poor style and lacking in substance, faults that may be fairly attributed to the inexperience of its authors (Coleman was twenty-two and Thornton thirty) and their youthful predilection to satire" (Graham, English Literary Periodicals, pp. 129-30). Say what Graham will, the essays sound interesting to the modern-day reader. Volume 2 alone contains essays on language, on news-papers, on the female world, on Christmas and Christmas boxes, on suicide, and a letter on a scheme for a female parliament.
