At this oracle, divine revelation was given in the form of a 'visionary trance', experienced as a psychic journey or leap of the soul into the world of truth. From the beginning, the cult and legend of Trophonios (and of similar heroes) turned upon the boundary between 'the other world' and the here-and-now, and were intimately linked with psychagogy, divination (including iatromancy), and the mysteries. The analysis of each of the oracle's components in the light of ancient mentalities has broadened our understanding of both Trophonios and of Greek divination in general.

Dans After Life in Roman Paganism, paru en 1922, Cumont analyse les conceptions de l?au-delà et de la vie après la mort dans le polythéisme du monde romain. Le c?ur de sa théorie est que la croyance en l?immortalité céleste, se diffusant dans le monde romain aux premiers siècles de notre ère, résulte de l?interaction entre deux influences d?origine distincte, mais convergentes?: la philosophie grecque (stoïcisme, pythagorisme et platonisme) et les «?religions orientales?». La seconde introduction concerne L?Égypte des astrologues, paru en 1937. Pour Cumont, l?astrologie aurait exercé une fonction d?intermédiaire entre les religions païennes et le monothéisme, donnant naissance à une religion, voire un mysticisme astral. À la suite du Liber Hermetis de Gundel, paru en 1936, il approfondit la tradition astrologique grecque de l?Égypte hellénistique, où circulèrent conceptions et croyances sur le destin des hommes en lien avec les mouvements des astres. En appendice, quatorze lettres adressées par Cumont à la jeune Claire Préaux en 1947 éclairent un projet de réédition de L?Égypte des astrologues, qui ne vit jamais le jour. Enfin, la troisième introduction est consacrée aux Mages hellénisés. En compagnie de Joseph Bidez, Cumont publia en 1938 deux tomes dont la gestation remonte aux années 20 et 30. Les deux auteurs partageaient un intérêt profond pour la pensée scientifique et religieuse d?origine «?chaldéenne?», pionnière et curieuse, et pour sa réception dans le monde gréco-romain.
