Clément, s.d. [ circa 1879-1880 ] Très beau tirage sur chine bénéficiant d'un superbe encrage pour cette célèbre gravure par Paul Rajon, d'après le fameux tableau de Léon Bonnat. Si l'on croise régulièrement cette gravure (qui fut notamment reproduite par la revue '"L'Art"), dans des tirages de qualité très diverses, ce présent tirage sur papier de chine semble rare. Béraldi évoque le graveur Paul Rajon comme un "admirable graveur au travail libre, fin et serré". (Béraldi, Graveurs du XIXe, XI, 124). Bon état (petites pliures en marges et infimes éclats d'encre) pour ce tirage au superbe encrage. Langue: Français.

There is no publication date on the title page, copyright page or limitation page. Preface is dated 1915. Limitation page (in French) is not numbered. A limited edition of 200 copies. Unpaginated. Full page plates, each with tissue sheet for protection. About 60 plates including work by Monet, Degas, Renoir, Rodin, Bonnard, Vuillard and many more. Plates are black and white lithographs. The book measures 11.25 x 14.5 inches. It appears that the book was originally issued in softcover, as there is a 'cover' page bound in at the front with title of the book & much more faded and worn that the interior pages. Front free endpaper has a crease, now unfolded. A remarkable collection by many artists whom we did not realize lived through the first World War. Please email with questions or to request photos. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Best known for his portraits of important figures including Adolphe Thiers, Victor Hugo, and Jules Grévy, Bonnat also created powerful religious and historical paintings. His 1874 depiction of the Crucifixion was rejected by the public as well as art critics for its naturalistic, almost expressionist style. - Self-addressed by the collector. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

His work is considered part of naturalism, in the academic tradition. In a gesture of gratitude for the help he had provided in his youth and with the assistance of Antonin Personnaz, Bonnat built a museum in his native city of Bayonne, the Musée Bonnat. Most of the works in the museum are from the personal collections of Bonnat and Personnaz, amassed over a lifetime of traveling around Europe. It includes an exceptionally fine collection of Old Master drawings from Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo to Ingres and Gericault.

Gérardmer, [1906] ; 4 pages in-12. Gérardmer, 1906. Faire uvre de charité en achetant un tableau dHenriette Brown. Le peintre demande un service. À Mulhouse, il y a un établissement de bienfaisance qui est tenu par les Surs de Niederbronn (congrégation fondée en 1849) qui possède à Niederbronn un orphelinat qui fait vivre soixante enfants (« cest vraiment touchant et digne du plus grand respect »). L'orphelinat doit trouver des ressources. Les Surs possèdent un tableau dune certaine Henriette Brown (peintre de scène de genre 1829-1901 également connue sous le nom de Madame de Scaux) et souhaiteraient sen défaire. Léon Bonnat demande que son ami Braun fasse jouer ses relations pour le vendre au musée de Mulhouse : « Il y a là une question de charité en même temps quune question dart ». Dans la seconde lettre, Braun attend lavis dun ami . Bonnat tient à préciser : « Vous avez bien compris ce que je vous disais entre les lignes, nest-ce pas ? On peut aimer ou ne pas aimer la peinture de Mme Brown. Je ne dis pas que ce soit un chef-duvre, mais je dis que, étant donné le talent de Mme Brown, le tableau dont je vous parle est un très bon Brown, et ainsi que je vous lécrivais : Cest tout ce que jai à vous dire de plus, il peut être intéressant pour un musée de posséder une uvre dune personne qui a eu une grande réputation ». Changeant de sujet, il le remercie des photographies qui feront la joie de quelques amies « de plus je leur prouve que jai eu des cheveux, parfois ».
