Hardcover. Zustand: Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated by Illustrated (illustrator). First Edition; First Printing. Cocked, tone, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover. ; "The practical art of leading troops in war. With numerous illustrations, practical exercies, and new tables of army organization. This text is written for the purpose of teaching a simple, definite system of tactics, being the system adopted by our army as a result of experience in all our wars. The method adopted is know as the Applicatory System, in which we proceed in each case from theory to practical illustrations and demonstrations, and finally to examination, tests and problems. The text covers in detail the tactics of the infantry and its auxiliary weapons, with a general survey of the operations of other arms. The duties of the leaders of the combat units, and the exact manner in which they perform these duties in various situations are explained and illustrated." Rejecting "the intolerable burden of maintaining large standing armies" this post-World War One textbook was designed to train junior officers and non-commissioned officers to lead future, hastily trained, citizen armies using simple small unit combat tactics. First Edition, First Printing of this classic New Military Library textbook incorporating the lessons of World War One operations. ; The New Military Library; xxii, 332, 105, 74 pages.

When U.S. troops entered World War I in 1917, he was quickly promoted to captain. He was a member of the 40th Division, but was appointed commander of Company K of the 308th Infantry Battalion, 77th Infantry Division . It was surrounded by the German Army's 5th Army in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, known as the Battle of the Hundred Days. The Germans sent a letter through an American prisoner of war urging them to surrender, but Battalion Commander Charles Whittlesey responded 'You go to hell!' and decided to defend the position. And in a situation where the supply route was cut off, he commanded about 500 soldiers, including the remaining troops, and defended the position for about 5 days, blocking the German army's offensive and winning with the arrival of reinforcements. In particular, Haldeman knocked out an enemy machine gunner and encouraged his allies despite being wounded by a gunshot. After the battle, he survived, along with Whittlesey and George McMurtry, and was awarded the Medal of Honor . He returned to service in the National Guard after the war and retired with the rank of colonel in 1923." (Namuwiki).
