Oblong quarto (320 x 250 mm). 3 pp. Three compositions for keyboard, with the title "3 Ungarische Tänze von Pokorny" added in a later hand. Pokorny spent most of his career in Bavaria, where he played in various court orchestras. He is primarily known as a composer of symphonies. - The back of the leaf consists of blank stave paper with the title "Marche de Ragoczy" written in pencil, probably indicating that the "Hungarian" character of the pieces led to an association with the Rákóczi March, which gained popularity in the nineteenth century in association with the Hungarian national cause, and which was arranged by Berlioz and Liszt among others. The rendering of the title in French suggests that this attribution dates from the time when the manuscript was in the library of the nineteenth-century Belgian violinist and composer Henri Vieuxtemps. - The pieces here are in 4/4 time, in B-flat major, with an 8-bar Allegro ritornello in 2/4 time repeated at the end of each piece. N° 1. Andante, 20 bars (without the repeats), then Allegro (8 bars). N° 2. Lento, 25 bars. N° 3. Andante, 16 bars (without repeats). - A clear and attractive example of keyboard composition from the heart of the Classical period. - Some edgewear, outer pages browned in accordance with age but clear and legible. - From the collection of the Belgian violinist and composer Henri Vieuxtemps (1820-81).
