In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Anglo-Boer War in 100 Objects brings the victories and the tragedies-and the full extent of the human drama behind this war-to life through 100 iconic artefacts. While a Mafeking siege note helps to illustrate the acute shortages caused by the siege, a spade used by a Scottish soldier at Magersfontein and the boots of a Boer soldier who died at Spion Kop tell of the severity of some of the famous battles. The book follows the course of the war but also highlights specific themes, such as British and Boer weaponry, medical services and POW camps, as well as major figures on both sides. The text is interspersed with striking historical images from the museum's photographic collection. More than 200 additional objects have been included to help tell the story of a conflict that left an indelible mark on the South African landscape. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In bottom right-hand corner: 'Photo-Lithographed - Pretoria - June 1901. | Mapping Section - Field Intelligence Dept - Army Head Qrs.' E. Liebenberg, in a paper titled 'The Cartographic Legacy of the Anglo-Boer War, 1899-1902', describes the 'valuable work' done by Jackson until the cessation of hostilities when he became Surveyor-General of the Transvaal Colony. As he explains, 'Major Jackson's Transvaal and Natal Series', of which the present item is a part, was the second of three series (the first being the 'Imperial Map of South Africa', and the third the 'Transvaal and Orange River Colony Degree Sheet Series), its deficiencies the result of the hurry with which it was compiled: 'Major Jackson's Transvaal and Natal Series was initiated by Major H M Jackson, head of the Topographical Section of the FID soon after Pretoria was occupied in June 1900. Also known as the First Transvaal Series, this series consisted of 74 sheets of irregular size covering the whole of the Transvaal (except the extreme north-eastern portion), Naral, Zululand and Swaziland, and part of the former Bechuanaland. The maps were printed in monochrome on linen-backed paper and were, like the Imperial Maps, folded to pocket size for easy usage on horseback. Compiled in a hurry for urgent military use, the maps are of a poor standard and it is uncertain whether they were of much use for military purposes. Although farm names and farm boundaries are shown, the physical topography is merely sketched in and no altitudes are given. According to Jackson himself, these maps were based on a mere 'patch-work' of farm diagrams and as such included much information that was of dubious value - if not positively misleading'. From the papers of Lieutenant-Colonel George Julian Selwyn Scovell of the 1st Cameron Highlanders, for more information regarding whom see his obituary in The Times, 29 April 1948, and his entry in Who Was Who. Scovell's diaries covering his period of service in the Boer War are offered separately.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. London, Stanley Paul & Co. Ltd., 1933. Octavo, 256 pages plus 28 pages of plates (totalling 40 illustrations from photographs). Gilt-lettered black cloth a little rubbed, sunned and marked; front cover slightly bowed; extremities a little bumped; edges a little foxed and marked; flyleaves lightly discoloured; a very good copy. The autobiography of British soldier, artist and sculptor Adrian Jones (1845-1938). Pages 111-114 (and the plate facing page 96) refer to his Boer War Memorial sculpture at the entrance to Government House at the corner of North Terrace and King William Street, Adelaide. Jones tells the story from the initial request by 'an influential Committee, representing the City of Adelaide' chaired by Sir Kiffin Thomas, to the unveiling in 1904 and Sir William Sowden's letter of appreciation some 21 years later. The Memorial 'was designed along the vigorous lines that appeal so strongly to the Australian people. Indeed, many Australians told me that they thought it the best statue in the country, but this may have been said to please me' (page 112). His 'magnum opus, however, was his "Peace Quadriga", 1912, for Constitution Arch, Hyde Park Corner, his hopes for a major unveiling ceremony (and perhaps even a knighthood) dashed by the death of his great advocate, King Edward VII, in 1910'. The preface states that this book 'contains the various orders which have from time to time appeared in C.D.F., L. of C., and C.C.F. orders regarding D.M.T.'s; and also in circular memorandums from heads of departments in South Africa regarding District Mounted Troops. Octavo, 45, [3] ('The Town Guard', 'Local Boer Losses', publisher's advertisements) pages. Tan hessian-patterned decorated wrappers; rear cover a little marked; small hole punched in the top left-hand corner of the entire pamphlet; trifling signs of use and age; an excellent copy. 'Second Edition' appears on the front wrapper, page [5] is 'Some Press Notices' of the first edition, and page [34] is a lengthy 'Addendum to the Second Edition'. The short introduction states that the 'information is derived from Diaries kept by residents, the personal communications of Dutch and English people who remained during the War, and the details of the first British occupation from some of the principal actors'. The list of Klerksdorpians on active service with the British forces runs to four pages. In 1939, Herman Guest, the publisher's son, had some of these original Klerksdorp printings bound up and issued with a new foreword, telling the story of the production of his father's 'records of the campaign in the Western Transvaal and elsewhere. It will be realized that the accounts were written during times of stress, and consequently some of the statements have an "ex parte" complexion. The[ir] value . lies in the fact that [they were] written and produced when Klerksdorp was practically in a state of siege. The inhabitants were unable to proceed a mile in any direction from the market square, and the one railway line, although closely guarded, was frequently disturbed by Boers'. Provenance: a Western Australian member of the 4th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.

All have captions or titles on the rectos, and many have descriptive text on the versos. A few minor signs of age and handling; one card with an unobtrusive ink stamp; overall, in near-fine condition. Each card comes in a glassine sleeve (some slightly torn), and the collection is now housed in two custom-made cloth-covered boxes. The stereo views depict scenes from some of the most important campaigns of the war (including Ladysmith, Colenso, Modder River, Kimberley, Spion Kop, and Pretoria), troop movements and positions, commanders from both sides (including Roberts, Kitchener, Baden-Powell, French, Botha, de Wet, and de la Rey), and the daily life of soldiers. Of specific interest are cards showing colonial units (three Australian, four Canadian, one New Zealand), prisoners of war, battle scenes (some appear to be staged), surveillance from hot air balloons, signals units, railway engineering, hospitals and wounded soldiers, and dead soldiers and war graves. The views were published by: Underwood & Underwood, New York (89 cards); H.C. White Co., Chicago (30 cards); Erdmann & Schanz, London (9 cards); Keystone View Company, Meadville (3 cards); and the Fine Art Photographers' Publishing Co., London (1 card). [132 items].
