Brill, Leiden (.), 1999. XIII,278p. Original blue gilt stamped cloth with wrps. Corner cut from free endpaper. Else fine. ?The fourteen essays in this volume - in English, German and French - were originally presented as papers at a conference organized by the Dutch Foundation for Early Christian Studies in March 1996. As a conference volume, the book exhibits the usual characteristics of the genre. Some essays are quite technical, while others um up the scholarship of the last few decades on a particular topic. (?) There is much learning exhibited in the essays, and several of them provide useful guides to the ?state of the discussion? about particular topics. (?) Overall, the editors seem to show how Christianity?s notion of ?divine revelation? distinguished Christina interpretation from the interpretation of the so-called pagan classics. A. Hilhorst?s opening essay provides a brief overview of biblical scholarship in the early church and is noteworthy for addressing some less well known texts (?). Several essays are devoted to showing how Scripture was used to rationalize/justify various aspects of church life (?). Three of the essays (?) focus on various aspects of early Christian art. A few essays link particular patristic texts with events of the day (?). One essay constitutes a word study (?). The influence of pagan rhetoric and literature on early Christian texts is explored in I. Sluiter?s discussion of the role of the ?entertainment factor? in Augustine?s advice to Christin teachers in ?De doctrine Christiana? and in G. Partoens?s exploration pof how pagan literary/philosophical imagery is mixed with the interpretation of the New Testament Parable of the Sower in Prudentius?s ?Book Against Symmachus?.? (ELIZABETH A. CLARK in Church History, 2000, p.636).

Brill, Leiden / Boston, 2015. XIX,257p. With two maps. Original blue gilt titled cloth. Nice copy. Like new. ?The penultimate instalment of the commentary on Ammianus Marcellinus follows the well-established mould of the series with detailed line-by-line discussion of philological and historical questions. As usual the commentary provides a wealth of information and is a good guide to recent scholarship on the various aspects the text touches upon and to the numerous problems posed by the text. Indeed, several conjectures are proposed. The authors should receive praise for their continuing commitment to the project and for offering readers of Ammianus a fixed point of reference to start their own investigations.? Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - One of the most conspicuous innovations of early Christianity within Greco-Roman culture is its reliance upon a collection of authoritative texts. The ultimate author of Scripture was thought to be God Himself, whose will could and should be sought and found in these holy writings. For this reason it is not surprising that very soon these texts not only became the object of careful attention and scholarly study, but also put their stamp on the various forms and manifestations of early Christian life, such as martyrdom, asceticism, liturgy, art, and literature. This multifarious influence of Scripture is the subject of The Impact of Scripture in Early Christianity. It contains fourteen contributions, predominantly in English, by Belgian and Dutch scholars which have been gathered in a thematically ordered collection.

These are grouped together in five categories: The archè in early christian thought, Essays on the Church Fathers, Philonica, Plotiniana, Essays on the relation between Greek and Patristic Thought. The volume includes a hitherto unpublished survey article on early Christian exegesis of 'the beginning' in Gen. 1:1 (in German), English translations of five contributions originally published in Dutch, and a complete bibliography of Pater van Winden's scholarly work.
