Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) fut non seulement un photographe majeur, mais, comme galer…iste et éditeur, il a été l'un des pivots de l'histoire artistique et littéraire du début du XXe siècle. New York, entre 1900 et la Grande Guerre, fut au coeur des activités de l'avant-garde internationale dans les arts et la poésie. Si l'on connaît mieux les écrivains américains à Paris dans les années vingt, tels Hemingway ou Fitzgerald, ou les artistes de l'abstraction expressionniste après 1945 aux États-Unis, les deux phénomènes prennent leurs sources autour de la galerie 291 de Stieglitz, avec les premiers poèmes de William Carlos Williams, les abstractions d'Arthur Dove et Marsden Hartley, et les Ready-Mades de Duchamp. Le Modernisme classique se crée à Londres avec Eliot et Pound, mais aussi sur des bases déjà très expérimentales, à New York, dans les poèmes de Mina Loy ou les premiers textes publiés de Gertrude Stein. Avant le célèbre Armory Show, Stieglitz exposait dans sa galerie Rodin, Picasso et Matisse. Promoteur des peintres américains et européens des premières avant-gardes, éditeur de Caméra Work, Alfred Stieglitz a joué un rôle de passeur ou de « carrefour » des influences culturelles de part et d'autre de l'Atlantique. Tous les enjeux (esthétiques, politiques, culturels) ultérieurement apparus prennent leur source dans cette période qu'il incarne au point que notre « modernité », dans toute sa complexité, aurait pu s'appeler le Siècle de Stieglitz. À Cerisy-la-Salle, en juillet 2010, un nombre important de spécialistes américains et français se sont donné rendez-vous pour débattre de la Photo-Sécession, du Pictorialisme, des peintres du cercle de Stieglitz (Sheeler, Stella, Weber, Demuth, Hartley, de Zayas, Morgan Russell, Georgia O'Keeffe, Dove), de Picabia, Duchamp et Arthur Cravan, des débuts de Dada, des écritures avant-gardistes, de Gertrude Stein et Mina Loy, du mélange des arts et des rapports du texte à l'image, de la culture de masse et de la société commerçante, autour de ce sujet foisonnant qu'est la culture new-yorkaise de 1890 à la fin des années 1930. Cet événement scientifique et sa publication ont reçu le label et le soutien de la Terra Foundation for American Art, de l'Institut des Amériques et du Ministère de la Culture (pour la traduction simultanée).

Neuware - In Blaise Cendrars: Discovery and Re-creation, Jay Bochner presents a revealing account of Cendrars' life and established the imoprtance of his work in the mainstream of modern literature. Prolific and versatile, Cendrars wrote poetry, radio plays, novels, essays, autobiography, and books on…the cinema. An early contributor to the Dada movement, he was at the forefront of the Paris avant-garde before and after the first world war, and his powerful poetic style influenced such writers as Apollinaire, Henry Miller, and John Dos Passos. Although he was well known to the French reading public, lavishly praised by his peers, and well received by the important critics of his day, Cendrars' critical reputation has not endured. The first part of the book is biographical, and in this section Professor Bochner suggests that the reasons for Cendrars' obscurity have more to do with his life than his works. Cendrars himself cared little about his reputation. Although he knew most of the important writers and artists working in Paris, he spent relatively little time actively engaged in the literary life there, frequently disappearing to work on films in southern France and Italy, to travel with gypsies, or to live in isolation. In fact the attention he attracted as an adventurer has perhaps overwhelmed and obscured his stature as a writer. The critical analysis of Cendrars' writing is divided into seven chapters, each corresponding to a period in which a particular genre dominated his publications. Professor Bochner's premise is that the serious reading of Cendrars shows that for him bourlinguer, knocking about the world, was discovery, not only of the world at large but of the shelf. He believed writing to be a re-creation of the self as well as the creation of a mythical world for an alternately disbelieving and enchanged reader. The title of his collected poetry, Du monde entier au coeur du monde, expresses the essential fusion of this writer's life and art. Professor Bochner's study is both a major contribution to the critical history of modern literature and an absorbing account of a fascinating personality.
