Synopsis: 'Amorous Fiammetta' is a landmark of early European literature, often cited as one of the first psychological novels ever written. Composed by the celebrated Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio, this evocative prose work shifts the traditional focus of courtly romance to the internal emotional landscape of its protagonist. Narrated from the first-person perspective of a noblewoman in Naples, the story chronicles Fiammetta's passionate affair with a young Florentine merchant named Panfilo and the profound despair that follows his departure.Through its intimate exploration of longing, jealousy, and abandonment, 'Amorous Fiammetta' offers a sophisticated portrayal of female desire and suffering. Boccaccio's mastery of narrative technique allows readers to experience the protagonist's shifting moods-from the heights of infatuation to the depths of suicidal ideation-making it a precursor to the modern novel of character. This work remains a vital contribution to Renaissance literature, reflecting the complexities of human emotion and the social constraints of the 14th century. Scholars and lovers of classic literature alike will find 'Amorous Fiammetta' to be a compelling study of the human heart, rich with classical allusions and timeless psychological insight. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This book contains an early translation of an excerpt from Giovanni Boccaccio's masterpiece, 'Decamerone.' The editor, Shinkei Takase (1853-1927), led a fascinating and diverse life. He was not only a master of the sword but also the owner of a bookstore, a dramaturgist, and even served as a priest in prison. Additionally, he founded an experimental clinic for mental diseases and practiced polygamy, making his life story as intriguing as the stories from 'Decamerone' itself. The illustrations in this book were created by Georges Bigot (1860-1927), a French illustrator with a deep fascination for Japanese culture. It's a rare and unusual case where a foreign artist was invited to illustrate a Western translation into Japanese. The text of this book is in Japanese. 1 vol. complete. 18,5x12,4cm. 2+46ll. 3 copperplate ills. One single hole and one horizontal worm track. Two red stamps on the front page and frontispiece. Zustand: Very good. New York, 1930., 1930. Very good. - Over 30 words penned on the 8-1/4 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide blank leaf excised from his book "Mr. Boccaccio of Broadway" (the book is not here present). The author Kenneth MacAlpin, likely a pseudonym, presents a copy of his book to the American actress and speakeasy club owner, "For Texas Guinan a grand gal - this second copy of the book! The first, of course went to the grand-est gal - but you come next Tex!" Signed "Sincerely 'Kenneth MacAlpin' New York 1930" with the postscript "It's a lie!!". The left edge of the page is slightly chipped and there is a small chip out from the top edge of the page. Very good. The elusive American author of "Mr. Boccaccio of Broadway", Kenneth McAlpin was likely a pseudonym as he shared the name with the legendary first king of Scotland. His real identity remains shrouded in mystery. The book (not here present), whose half-title reads "The Pentameron of Mr. Boccaccio of Broadway", is a collection of 5 slightly racy & risque satirical stories with illustrations by Harold DeLay. Published by Ross Neu of the New Publishing Company, MacAlpin dedicated the book to "Harry Stephen Keeler who strongly suspects my real identity".The American actress & singer "Texas" Guinan appeared on stage and screen, eventually forming her own film production company. Yet, she is most famous for the several New York City Prohibition era Speakeasy clubs she managed. Backed by mobsters and bootleggers, her clubs catered to the rich and famous of New York society as well as politicians and featured jazz bands and chorus girls. Though she was once arrested during police raids of the clubs, charges were dismissed.…
