In den WarenkorbIn relic condition, but a superb piece thrumming with enthusiasm. A souvenir assembled by Eric Lister, at the time an 18 year-old merchant seaman, through several visits to New York on Atlantic convoy duty; chronicling through autographs, annotations, and ephemera encounters with his jazz heroes on their home territory. Crammed…in a pocket and carried on his late-night rounds of the clubs, inevitably battered but all the more evocative for that. A single issue of this short-lived and rare "fanzine" - editorial advisers including John Hammond, William Russell and Frederic Ramsay, Timme Rosenkrantz, and Art Hodes - Volume I, No. 3, annotated inside the wrap, "On the opposite page are autographs of various jazz personalities I saw on my first visit to New York, 5/1/44 all between 6 P.M. of the 5th & 4 A.M. of the 6th. At the following places - Nicks, Kelly's Stables, Onyx Club, Three Deuces, Commodore Music Shop, Hickory House", on the facing page are 16 signatures including those of of Dizzy Gillespie, Ben Webster, Eddie Condon, Pee Wee Russell - Lister's hero, Wilbur de Paris - Slam Stewart, and Miff Mole. Scattered through the remaining pages are some 30 additional signatures and inscriptions, sometimes with contact details, often annotated as to when and where obtained, either direct to the page or on available scraps, table cards, or business cards. On 28 January '44 at 18 Club, the Yacht Club, and Milt Gabler's Commodore Music Shop he gathered Gabler's Decca business card on which the producer has pencilled details of some recent Joe Marsala recordings, a membership card for Gabler's Sunday Swing Club at Jimmy Ryan's with Pop Foster's contact details, a table card for the Yacht Club with signatures of William "Serious" Myers current trio "Plink Plank Plunk" and Hot Lips Page. Decca house pianist Frank Froeba has signed the page in pencil, and Lister has further noted, "Also I met Timmie Rosencrantz [sic.], the famous "Jazz Baron and one of the advisory board of the magazine. On 23 February he got a Yacht Club card inscribed, "To Eric I enjoyed jamming with you, Sincerely a friend Trummie Young". On another page Josh White inscribes "To Eric, the best of every thing", and Mary Lou Williams signs "always", a mounted card from the Three Deuces is inscribed in pencil by Big Sid Catlett, another for Eddie Condon's Town Hall concerts is signed by Milton Mezz Mezzrow and drummer Danny Alvin Viniello who both give his contact details. Beneath Lister notes, "Played at Jimmy Ryan's with Art Hodes, Mezz Mezzrow, Danny Alvin 20/4/44. Also sat in with Frank Orchard". The same page has the signatures of Benny Carter, Bobby Hackett and Ernie Caceres. The autograph curator was Eric Lister (1926-1988), New Orleans-style clarinettist and blues singer fondly remembered on the Manchester and London scenes; whole food restaurateur, owner of The Nuthouse on Kingly St, Soho; dealer in classic cars, and motor sport and cycle enthusiast; promoter of naive and primitive art and founder of the influential Portal Gallery (Giles Chapman, obituary, Classic and Sports Car, July, 1988). In the 70s, with his friend and gallery client S. J. Perelman, he retraced the 1912 Paris to Peking race in a vintage MG. During the war Lister served as a waiter on the Cunard-White Star liner Mauretania, co-opted as a troop transport crossing the Atlantic between Liverpool and Halifax, Nova Scotia, and New York. He must have leapt at the chance to sign on, and his shore leaves were evidently filled with club hopping, hanging out and jamming with some of the pre-eminent figures on the scene, previously just names on cherished discs and pages of fan magazines like JAZZ. Octavo, pp. 32. Profusely illustrated with smudgy half-tone illustrations, double-page centre-spread of Wilbur de Paris, his brother Sidney features on the front cover. Wire stitched in the original monochrome printed pictorial wrappers. Seriously used, vertical crease where folded in half, soiled, scuffed, some bifolia shaken loose, numerous annotations, autographs, staple marks and business cards stapled in, a gloriously evocative wreck, but hanging in there.
