Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 104 x 64 mm (mount); verso with imprint of 'B. C. Boake. From Freeman Bros. Photographer. 330 George St. Sydney. (over Mr. Jones, Jeweller &c.)'; a strong print with excellent clarity; the print and mount are both in very good condition. A lovely full-length portrait by Irish-born photographer Barcroft Capel Boake. Boake had established himself as a photographer in Melbourne between 1858 and 1862 before relocating to Sydney, where he worked for Freeman Bros. for several years. He then branched out on his own once again: his studio at 330 George Street was active during the decade 1867-77.

Albumen print photograph with hand colouring, carte de visite format, 106 x 63 mm, image 77 x 55 mm (oval format), blind stamped lower left Boake Sydney; the verso with imprint of B.C. Boake. Photographer. 330 George St. Sydney. (over Mr. Jones, Jeweller &c.); both the the albumen print and mount are in fine condition. The Sydney studio of B.C. Boake is known to have taken carte de visite portrait photographs of members of the Challenger expedition during its visit in 1874, and numerous other naval portraits from this studio are held in Australian collections. Boake may have had a maritime connection, as he seems to have been able to attract distinguished naval clientele to his establishment. Between 1867 and 1877 Boake's studio was located at 330 George Street, just south of Hunter Street - a relatively short distance from Farm Cove. The subject of this prestigious portrait is wearing the gold epaulettes of a naval commodore, and is possibly one on the commanders of the Royal Navy's Australia Station between 1866 and 1877, perhaps either Rowley Lambert (May 1867 - April 1870) or Frederick Stirling (April 1870 - May 1873).

Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 103 x 63 mm (mount); verso with back mark of 'B. Boake / Photographer, Miniature & Portrait Painter. 353 George Street [wet-stamped over 530 George Street] Sydney', and fully contemporary inscription in ink identifying the sitter: 'Revd. Mr. Palmer. Sydney, NSW 1879'; both the print and mount are in fine condition. The following obituary for Rev. Henry Andrew Palmer appeared in The Sydney Mail and New South Wales Advertiser, 31 May 1879: 'The Rev. H. A. Palmer. In the death of the Rev. H. A. Palmer, incumbent ofPetersham, whose portrait appears in this issue of theSydney Mail, the Anglican Church in this colony hassustained a severe loss. He is mourned by those whohad the privilege of knowing him, either as friendor parish clergyman, with a sincerity which is themost eloquent testimony to his worth. Men suchas he was?enthusiastic promoters of purity, truth, honour, charity, and kindred qualities?have a morethan denominational value. They may be constitutionallymodest and quiet?as Mr. Palmer was?but their life-influence is a distinct gain to the whole community. The leading external facts of his life may be briefly stated. He wasthe son of Shorley Palmer, Esq., M. D., of Tamworth,England, and was born there in 1827. He was for sometime a scholar in King Edward VI. Grammar School,at Birmingham. On his first arrival in the colony heentered into a business life, and during that period gaveconsiderable assistance at Christ Church, Sydney. Aftersome time, he was ordained deacon on the 21st September,1851, in St. Andrew's Cathedral, by Bishop Broughton. He was licensed as minister in the gold district of theTuron on the 1st November in the same year. On the 19thDecember, 1852, he was ordained priest at St. James'sChurch, Morpeth, by the late Bishop of Newcastle. He continued to work in the Turon district till 1861.In that year he was glad to be relieved from the onerousduties which had devolved upon him for 10 years amidstthe gold-digging populations of the Turon, and to takecharge of Pitt Town, Wilberforce, and Sackville Reach, onthe Hawkesbury River. In 1869 he accepted the charge ofthe Canterbury and Petersham parishes. In 1870 thetwo were erected into separate cures, and Mr. Palmerretained Petersham. His death, it will be remembered, was sudden and unexpected. He had officiatedon the Sunday, and was found dead in his bedon the Monday morning. He died on May 4th, aged51. It will be seen that in the course of his ministerial lifeMr. Palmer had to deal with three classes of population, eachwidely divergent from the others. At the Turon he had todeal with thousands of men drawn from all parts of theworld, sorely smitten with gold fever, a most difficult community for a Christian teacher to affect. But thequalities of Mr. Palmer's character were eminentlyfitted to impress such a people. The Australiandigger can always appreciate manliness?and in thisinstance the man shone brightly through the clergyman. On the Turon there are many traditions of his courage andgenerosity. At the Hawkesbury he found himself amidstan agricultural population, of course much less excited thana multitude of miners. At Petersham he had a congregation of well-to-do metropolitan folks. By all theseclasses of people he was equally beloved, and amongstthem he has left a fragrant memory such as mightwell be the ambition of any clergyman of anysect. In the Anglican Church he was generallyaccounted one of its most estimable and valuable ministers.Judged by the standard of ability, Mr. Palmer was thepossessor of average gifts, diligently cultured. Judged bythe higher test of character, Mr. Palmer wore the whiteflower of a blameless life.'.

Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 104 x 64 mm (mount); verso with the back mark of 'B. C. Boake, from Freeman Bros., Photographer, 330 George St., Sydney (over Mr. Jones, Jeweller &c.)', and inscribed and signed in ink by the sitter: 'In remembrance of your visit on board HMS Endymion. Jno. Hall'; both the print and mount are in fine condition. The frigate HMS Endymionwas part of Admiral Phipps? Hornby?s Flying Squadron which circumnavigated the globe in 1869-70. The Squadron made its official entry into Sydney Harbour on 12 December 1869. During the Endymion's sojourn in Sydney, the ship's Fourth Engineer, John Hall had his portrait taken at B. C. Boake's studio - as did, most likely, many of the ship's other officers and crew. He presented this particular carte de visite to a member (or acquaintance of) the wealthy and well-connected Balcombe family of "The Briars", Mornington, Victoria, who had been invited on a tour of inspection of the ship. Provenance: Photograph album kept by Jane Emma Murphy (Balcombe) (1854-1924), of"The Briars", Mornington (and later, St. Kilda, Melbourne), Victoria, Australia; thence by descent through the àBeckett family, Melbourne.
