So wurden im deutschsprachigen Raum lateinische, mundartliche und deutsche Sprichwörter je nach Zeitalter über die Epochen hinweg gesammelt und auch in der Literatur gepflegt. Ziele der Sammlungen waren meistens erzieherischer und schuldidaktischer Art (Dogbeh 2000:157). Einen ernsthaften wissenschaftlichen Charakter erhielt das Sprichwort in der deutschen Sprachwissenschaft erst im 19. Jahrhundert mit der bislang größten Sprichwortsammlung von Wander 'Deutsches Sprichwörterlexikon'. Weitere bedeutende Nachschlagewerke sind z.B. Seilers Deutsche Sprichwörter-Kunde, Lexikon der sprichwörtlichen Redensarten von Röhrich (1973) und das Sprichwörterlexikon von H. und A. Beyer (1985) (ebd.).Diese Betrachtung verdeutlicht, welchen relevanten Stellenwert die Sprichwörter im Kontext des sprachlichen Handelns innehaben. Dementsprechend sollen sie der Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit unter dem Gesichtspunkt der sprachlichen Routinen sein. Zu diesem Zwecke wird im Folgenden zunächst eine Definition von Sprichwörtern erfolgen (Kapitel 2), um diese im Anschluss im Kapitel 3 von anderen ähnlichen sprachlichen Erscheinungen abzugrenzen. Weiterhin werden formale Merkmale des Sprichworts betrachtet (Kapitel 4). Ferner wird die Zugehörigkeit von Sprichwörtern zu Phraseologismen unter den Gesichtspunkten Polylexikalität, Festigkeit und Idiomatizität begründet (Kapitel 5), um sie daran anschließend in den Gesamtbereich der Phraseologie einordnen zu können (Kapitel 6). Zu diesem Zweck wird in Kapitel 2 die begriffliche Differenz zwischen Rahmen und Rahmung vorangestellt wird, um im dritten Kapitel die primären Rahmen näher beleuchten zu können. Diese werden in zwei Kategorien unterteilt, womit sich das vierte Kapitel beschäftigen wird. Zudem dienen primäre Rahmen als Ausgangsmaterial für mannigfaltige Sinntransformationen. Goffmans Ziel ist es, Regeln anzugeben, nach denen primäre Rahmen in etwas anderes transformiert werden. Aus diesem Grund findet in Kapitel 5 eine Beschäftigung mit den Begriffen der Modulation und der Täuschung statt. Letztendlich untersucht Goffman soziale Interaktionen mit einer Neugier auf das, was sich hinter der Maske tut.
