Blegen, "the Troy that was built by… masons, carpenters and labourers,that Troy, in its ruined state today, differs greatly from the glamourous citadel pictured in [the Iliad and the Odyssey]. Butif one is blessed with a little imaginationwhen one stands on the ancient hill top and looks out over the Trojan plain one cannot escape feeling that this Troy, too, has a powerful enchantment." Author Blegen succeeds in uncovering precisely that enchantment in Troy and the Trojans. Using material gleaned from the famous Cincinnati Expedition, as well as from his own exhaustive scholarship and fieldwork, Blegen takes us chapter by chapter through seven Troy "settlements, covering the period 3000 to 1000 b.c Along the way we learn that the fabled wall encircling the citadel was a feature from the beginning and that the city was destroyed four times (the first time by fire, the second by unknown causes, the third by earthquake, and the fourth by a fire that seems to have been the result of invaders who captured the city, looted it, and put it to the torch). The authors attentive and careful analysis of the archaeological evidencewhich includes architectural ruins (the wall, towers, gates, and houses), pottery, weapons, and miscellaneous objectsprovides readers with a vivid account of what life might have been like for those Trojans who, despite periodic destruction, held fast to their citadel, rebuilding it three times. Ble- gen reveals the clues that suggest, for example, what the Trojans ate (they had a fondness at one time for venison and later for turtle steak); when the loom first appeared; and when the horse, whose association with the Trojan people is legendary, came on the scene. Neuware - In spring 1939, as the prospect of war loomed, a joint Greek-American archaeological expedition began excavation on the hill of Epano Englianos, high above the modern town of Pylos in southwest Greece. Almost immediately more than 600 tablets bearing inscriptions in Linear B script were uncov…ered, as well as stone walls, fragments of frescoes, and stucco floors. The discoveries were kept secret during the war years and it was only in 1952 that the project could return to uncover, over 15 seasons, the Mycenaean building now know as the Palace of Nestor. This beautifully illustrated color guide surveys the buildings and objects discovered and reconstructs life in the citadel and its associated tombs. It also describes the surrounding landscape, using evidence uncovered by the Pylos Regional Archaeological Project which surveyed the wider area around the palace between 1992 and 1995.
