The development of the hero: Sigmund Freud and the reformation of the Jewish tradition. Original reprint from Psychoanalysis & Contemporary Thought, 11(4), 639-703. Never touched, like new! 639-703 S. Examines Freud's Jewish associations, the nature of this identification, and its impact on his personal and professional life. The author formulates an understanding of Jewish intellectual history and its relation to Freud and his psychoanalytic endeavor. It is noted that Jewish scripture promoted both an individualistic and a hierarchical formula for humanity's relation to God and that the interaction between these 2 dimensions has led historically to a reformatory impulse. Freud is shown to exhibit this interaction in his desire to be both a leader and a reformer and in his identification with Moses and Jacob. Jacob represented the capacity of the individual to interject himself into a tradition, while Moses represented the one who developed and maintained authority in the tradition.
