Marbled edges and endpapers. xvi, 861 pp. Spine a little cocked. Rubbing and wear to edges, chafing to boards. Typical browning and spotting to interior. A few marginal damp stains.

This copy is just back from the bindery, now bound with marbled paper (light blue) over boards, and attractive dual-weave blue and brown cloth spine. Blue endpapers. Text block tight and secure with original headbands and the remains of marbled decorations on the fore-edges. Original endpapers and first blank are gone. First page after the new endpaper is the frontispiece engraving. Title page dated 1857. Copyright page also dated 1857. This is the first printing. 832 pages plus engravings. There is no list of how many engravings there should be, but we see no evidence that any are missing. The most infamous, showing the way people were packed into a transport ship, is present opposite page 305. We see one plate with tape repair on the rear and another text page with similar repair. There is foxing throughout, more pronounced at the first half of the book than the second half. Overall a very attractive copy of important pre-Civil War history of the peculiar institution.
