Verlag: Alabama, Florida, 1942

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Oblong small quarto measuring 11" x 7". String-tied brown leather with "service album Camp Rucker, Alabama" and an illustration on the front board. Contains 185 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" and 5" x 7" with captions. Very good album with some spotting and edgewear with near fine dustwrapper. A photo album kept by Sergeant Horace Blake and his wife while at Camp Rucker in Alabama and on leave in Florida between 1942 and 1943. The first three pages include autographs of his fellow soldiers including names and addresses. Following this is a photo of Blake posed with other men at Camp Rucker in August of 1942. Various parts of the camp are seen throughout the early pages of the album including buildings, men, and Blake posed in front of his barracks. After this Blake is sent to Camp Carrabelle, later changed to Camp Gordon Johnston, in Florida. It appears they drove to the camp and were visiting during a leave with one photo captioned "Horace drove car all night." These photos show Blake and some girlfriends enjoying the Florida beaches, swimming and lounging on the sand. They drove through the state visiting Tallahasse and the Ochlockonee River. They visited Perkins Beach, Florida and stayed at the beach house of Lieutenant Colonel Lambert. A newspaper clipping seen here reads, "Mrs. Horace Blake left on Monday for Tallahasse, Florida where she will spent some time with her husband Sergeant Horace Blake." They photographed the beach house, their car, beaches, tress, and the sunset. One set of photos from December 1942 shows them celebrating Horace's birthday with images of their dog and Horace posed with his birthday cake. Another photo shows an aerial shot from a beach of planes flying overhead. Mrs. Blake photographed the Lieutenant Colonel and his wife after their home. They stayed in Florida through Christmas and spent the day fishing and enjoying the sunshine. Following these photographs are Christmas cards from friends and family tipped in. They stayed in Florida through August of 1943 when the album ends with photos of Horace and Mrs. Blake swimming and boating with friends. An interesting collection of Florida vacation photographs taken by a soldier and his wife during World War II.
