Bladen's 'Observation' evaluated the state-of-the-realm in 1636 to encourage discourse of the Establishment, resources of the country, its strengths and the merits of two of the most powerful men of the time. This previously unpublished piece of work has been transcribed in this short book as it produces an interesting account of the able men, armaments and shipping which could be mustered in the prelude to the English Civil War.

His regiment formed part of Nott's 'Candahar Division' and its role was as part of the so called 'army of retribution' which marched to Cabul to 'conclude' the conflict after the appalling disaster which culminated in the annihilation of a British army under Elphinstone as it retreated from the Afghan capital. The 40th's route took them once again to Ghuznee, the scene of fighting for the 'Army of the Indus' early in the war, but this time the city was left as a smoking ruin. This book graphically describes a time of almost perpetual hard fought running battle as the column ground forward towards its objective; descriptions of attacks on the column, night attacks upon the camp and open set piece engagement fill its pages. Arriving in Cabul shortly after Pollock's forces, the author met the liberated prisoners of the Afghan disaster including the redoubtable Lady Sale. Withdrawal-nothing less than a fighting retreat with the rearguard hard pressed-from Cabul meant the column of which the 40th formed part had to follow the line of the catastrophic march of the destroyed British army and the author's description of the horrors they witnessed as gun carriages literally ground over the bones of former comrades makes harrowing reading. Nevertheless, this is a different account of the war told from a company officer's perspective and is recommended. Available in softback or hardback with dustjacket.

First edition, scarce. Neill gives an excellent eyewitness account of the First Anglo-Afghan War, with interesting descriptions of many important places he passed through during the campaign, including Karachi, Kandahar, and Kabul. A second edition was published the following year. Neill (1814-1859), born in Ayrshire, joined the 40th Foot as an ensign in 1833. The 40th was part of General William Nott's force, a constituent of Pollocks "Army of Retribution", conducting a punitive expedition following the disastrous retreat from Kabul. Having released the Kabul prisoners, the army effected a fighting withdrawal through the Khurd Kabul and Khyber passes, "where the evidence of the earlier disaster was only too apparent" (Lancashire Infantry Museum). Neall gives a graphic picture of the Khurd Kabul pass "literally strewed with the horrid remains of men In some places the slain lay in heaps, probably marking the place where they had made a gallant, but ineffectual stand" (p. 273). Inscribed on the half-title "F. G. Delamain, from Ella, Feby. 1910". Frank Gunn Delamain (1858-1939) served with XI Bengal Lancers; Ella was his sister. Their father, Colonel Charles Henry Delamain (1796-1870) fought with the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry, leading a combined artillery-cavalry column on the march to Kabul, and is mentioned several times in Neill's book. Black, printed on India paper and mounted, title page vignette of regimental badge; with the publisher's 32- and 22-page catalogues at the end, the first dated May 1845. Covers a little marked, corners worn, lower fore corner of half-title and frontispiece repaired, title page a little tattered at edges, some finger soiling and scattered foxing: a good copy.
