Thomas Blacklock (1721-1791) was a Scottish poet and clergyman. Blind from smallpox in infancy, he was educated at Edinburgh University. He became a minister in Kirkcudbright in 1759 but returned to Edinburgh in 1764. He published a volume of poems in 1760, but he is remembered for a letter of encouragement to Robert Burns after the publication of the Kilmarnock edition, which helped persuade Burns to remain in Scotland. The present edition of his poems is prefixed with a brief account of Blacklock and his writings, and concludes with an Essay on the Education of the Blind by M. Hauy. The book is bound in contemporary marbled paper covered boards with leather corners and spine. The case of the book reflects its age with heavy shelf wear and soiling to the board. There are also cuts to the paper on the boards and it looks as if the book may have been used as a cutting board by a previous owner. The edges of the boards are bumped with damage and some loss and the corners are lightly bumped with loss to the leather on the corner tips. The leather spine is stained and only parts of a worn title label remain. The contents are tight with old home repairs and replacement of the fixed endpapers and the original free endpapers are missing. The pages are clean with light soiling to the title-page which also has noticeable creasing neat the fore edge. The preliminary pages and those containing the life of the author have a vertical crease about 3" from the fore edge. As mentioned above, pages 252 onwards are missing and have been replaced with photocopies and the leaf containing pages 217/218, probably a title-page for the Essay at the end of the book, is missing. A one-line inscription has been written just above the publisher's details on the title-page. Overall, this is probably best regarded as being a sound reading and reference copy. …
