Die Gesteine in diesem Gebiet gehören im wesentlichen zwei geologischen Großstrukturen an (unterpermische Sedimentgesteine und Magmatite des Saar-Nahe-Beckens sowie tertiäre Ablagerungen des Mainzer Beckens). Die komplette Neuaufnahme des Blattes durch unseren Mitarbeiter Herrn Dr. Peter Schäfer basiert u.a. auf ca. 11.000 Sondierungen mit dem Pürckhauer-Bohrstock. Mikropaläontologisch wurden ca. 3000 Proben untersucht. Daraus ergab sich ein detailliertes tektonisches Bild der Bruchschollenlandschaft im Mainzer Becken.
