For the purpose of celebrating 100 years of teaching anthropology in India, the Council of the Indian Anthropological Society undertook a programme of organizing a series of Special Lectures in the cherished memory of a selected group of distinguished anthropologists of India who immensely contributed to the growth of Indian anthropology in three of its sub-disciplines over the last 10 decades. Thus, in all 14 special lectures were organized by the Society in collaboration with 14 different institutions engaged in either teaching and/or research in Anthropology. However, we have received 11 articles written by senior anthropological scholars for publication in this book. The distinguished anthropologists whose life and academic contributions are portrayed in this book are: B. K. Roy Burman, B.N. Saraswati, U. Deka, P.K. Bhowmik, L.P. Vidyarthi, P.K. Ganguly, G. Sarana, D.P. Mukherjee, B.N. Banerjee, D.K. Bhattacharya and A. Basu. It is expected that this rich collection of papers should be of much help to all serious students of anthropology, providing them with enough motivating spirit to work towards the advancement of anthropology.

In recent years, the term Health Disparity and Health Equity have become increasingly familiar, particularly in the field of public health. The editors of this book have brought together a variety of articles from researchers of diverse fields in anthropology to focus on the importance of health equity among the indigenous peoples, including those who are marginalized or underprivileged. This will help the reader to understand the problem that arises out of health disparity and the various ways to overcome it. One of the most interesting features of this book is that the contributing authors of most of the articles have discussed their findings based on field work. Besides, researchers of varied other fields of public health, economics, sociology etc., have brought out various dimensions which have added further value for which the volume will be extremely beneficial to policy makers. Such an interdisciplinary approach makes it more useful for both the scholars who are pursuing research in medicine and public health as well as those who are at the foundational stage of their career in teaching as well as research.
Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. It has been frequently reported by the medical practitioners and public health workers that very often people do not utilize the medical and preventive facilities available to them. Social and economic factors are generally accepted as highly important in the multiple causation of disease. Therefore, health workers must come to understand such factors if they are to deal effectively in both primary prevention and cure of disease and other health disorders. Urbanization and changing environmental situations have also created various health problems. Again, in the contemporary world, one cannot deny the various health hazards associated with different jobs. These are the emerging health challenges based on changing socio-cultural and economic situation. One will have to address and examine some of these new health problems. Besides this, knowledge and documentation of traditional medicine is also equally important. Many such issues have been examined in the present volume. These well-researched papers cover wide range of issues related to health. There are three sections in the present volume. Section I deals with Health Issues and Human Rights . Section II is on Occupation and Health: The Challenges and the last section is on Changing Health Scenario: Opportunities and Challenges . It is expected that the findings of these research papers would create interest among health administrators and scholars/researchers of anthropology, sociology and medical science.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The concept of human security has initiated the debate what security means and how to achieve it. The varied notions and concepts of human security initiated an interesting debate. Justice, equality and human dignity are the watch words of human rights discourse and intimately connected with human security. But the inequity of the international economic order has produced unacceptable levels of inequality, both internally and internationally. The concept of 'human security' has been defined and pursued in different ways by different nation states as a means of reducing the human costs of violent conflicts, as a strategy to enable governments to address basic human needs and offset the inequities of globalization, and as a means to provide social safety nets to impoverished, marginalized people. Going beyond security in the military or political context, human security also requires environmental, resource and livelihood security. Security and Equality are prerequisites for stability and sustainability. Anthropology and the social sciences have a vital role to play in clarifying and developing principles, norms, rules and institutions to undertake action towards such an understanding of security, and in participating in the dialogue among citizens and policy makers. The papers included in this volume presented in an international conference seek to create a platform for interdisciplinary research with cross-cultural data to contribute to transformations to a sustainable world. Anthropology with its holistic approach is well positioned to address some of these challenges and may contribute to a more just world order.

Such kind of development has its own pros and cons, and impacting human health, nutrition and population structure. Documentation of such rampant changing world is becoming difficult; all events can t be recorded. In future, there would not be evidences of such events. They may not be important or vice-versa. This book is an attempt to record some of important changes of health and nutrition being taken place among children, adolescents and mothers. There would also be glimpses of fertility and mortality. The book is divided into 13 chapters. The chapters are derived from the research papers presented in an International Conference entitled Indigenous People, Human Security and Sustainable Development: Emerging Challenges in the Present Global Context held at Kolkata during 19-21 Jan 2018 organized by Commission of Human Rights, International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES) and Department of Anthropology, West Bengal State University, Barasat Kolkata 700 126.
