Grande et belle épreuve photographique sur papier albuminé montée sur carton lithographié, réalisée par les Frères Bisson (monogramme en relief de l'atelier en marge inférieure de la photographie et monogramme aux armes de Pie IX). ''Au même titre que Félix Nadar, Édouard Baldus ou Gustave Le Gray, les Frères Bisson ont été les premiers à essayer de se détacher des techniques imposées par l'usage du daguerréotype, notamment en abandonnant la pose photographique au profit de l'instantané. Actifs pendant l'«âge doré» du mécénat photographique, entre 1847 et 1855, les frères Bisson fondent leur originalité sur l'utilisation de très grands tirages (jusqu'à 100 81 cm) et sur la mise en pratique commerciale de leurs techniques. En effet, de 1852 à 1863, la «maison Bisson frères», rue Garancière, compte jusqu'à trente employés et gagne une renommée internationale par l'exécution de commandes très variées.'' Marges blanches présentant un écclat légèrement altéré. Du reste, très belle condition.

Full olive green morocco, both covers with gilt filets and blindtooling, gilt title on front cover, a.e.g., apart from some minor scratches and a few usual spots inside an extremely attractive copy. This is the first time (1853) a book is published with the photographs reproduced from albumen-on-glass negatives. The photographers were Bisson & Frères and the photographs were printed by Lemercier. The commentary was written by Charles Blanc, former French minister of Fine Arts.
