Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 4th Edition. I am pleased to be able to offer a very lovely two-volume set of: "The Poetical Works of Robert Browning", with portraits. These two books were published by John Murray of London, and are a late impression of the "Definitive Edition, first issued in 1896, and reprinted by Murray in 1919, and in this instance, in 1924. There are bound in gorgeous leather boards with gilt framing and five raised bands on the gilt decorated spine with gilt title panels. The page edges are full gilt. They were bound by Riviere & Son (please see the photos). According to the Editor's Note in Volume I, "The Edition is a complete one, containing all Mr. Browning's regularly published plays and poems, from Pauline (1833) to Asolando (1889).In all the poems the poet's latest readings have been followed." Condition: These two volumes are in very good condition, albeit with some signs of wear. The most serious of those is that the gutter on the front of Volume I is cracked over its full length. The board is still attached by the strings of the binding and I submit that restoration by a competent bookbinder or book repairer would be well worth it, especiallyu considering the original Riviere & Son binding. There has also been some light bumping to the corners and spine tips but the books are still treasures to behold. There is some dryness and slight cracking to the leather of the spine (that too can probably be remedied or at least safeguarded). Inside, a former owner has left her name and date (Kathleen Kennedy, Christmas 1929). The interior pages are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing. The other three hinges are intact and the bindings are tight and square. These books are not ex-library or remainders.
