Fascism, both in its theory and its practice, has always been abhorrent to me, and thus I have been singularly immune from a temptation which, up to recently at least, used to trouble some of my coreligionists in Great Britain, the temptation " to gaze On prosperous tyrants with a dazzled eye." At the same time I do not believe that my dislike of the totalitarian machine has led me to minimize any of its practical achievements, or to deal unfairly with the remarkable man who for twenty years has dictated the tortuous courses of Italian Fascism. True, Mussolini has ridden by me in the Villa Borghese without ever conveying to me the least impression of 'the world spirit on horseback'; on the other hand I find it difficult to be patient with those who affect to see in him nothing more than a glorified Al Capone. Nor have I sought to dismiss the attitude of philo-Fascist Catholics in Italy as 'diplomatic' rather than genuine; I have met several whose deep attachment to the regime was beyond suspicion, and while I wholly dissent from their view that a synthesis between Fascist and Christian doctrine can be achieved, I have never thought of questioning the sincerity with which they hold it.
