In the 1990s an academic interest aroused from certain quarters to locate the Congress party in the context of the three trends in Indian politics like mandal mandir and market. This study focuses on the policies and strategies of the Congress in relation to its emphasis on the role of the developmental state and its transition towards market oriented development in the 1990s. The Congress party which developed an intrinsic relationship between the developmental state and market for its mobilization strength and domination in Indian politics over a period of time was at the receiving end of the crisis. Since the market oriented economic reforms attacked the developmental state it contributed to the de institutionalization of the party. By shifting the developmental strategy from the state oriented to a market oriented one great harm has been done to the Congress party and its legitimacy over Indian politics. During the second generation reforms under the BJP led NDA government the Congress party underwent a process of introspection and reiteration. Then it realized that the policies of socialism and social justice which were anathema for it during the economic reforms under the Rao regime have the potentiality to mobilize the alienated social groups and thereby reinvent its space in Indian politics. 300 pp.
Hardcover. Zustand: New. Translated from the Malayalam by Abhirami Girija Sriram and K.S. Bijukumar Jezebel, a young doctor in Kerala, struggles against the cruel realities of a patriarchal world-realities that not even her education, resolve or professional brilliance can shield her from. Her already contentious divorce proceedings go suddenly awry, and her unhappy marriage holds complex secrets. In K.R. Meera's blistering new novel, which takes the form of a courtroom drama to show us the rich inner worlds of its characters, we see Jezebel reflect on her life and its pivotal points as she takes the stand. Through her memories, we see her grow from a reticent, serious young woman to a rebel who refuses to bend to the conventions of society. Like the Biblical story of Queen Jezebel, who was much maligned as a scheming harlot and infamously thrown to her death from her palace window, Jezebel is a novel that asks if independent women can ever live lives that are free of judgement K.R. Meera's hypnotic prose, in this elegant translation from the Malayalam by Abhirami Girija Sriram and K.S. Bijukumar, makes resonant allusions to the Bible in powerful ways that elucidate the correlations between legend and the protagonist's life while also exploring how sexuality and gender roles are manipulated by the dictates of society.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In liberal democracy, media plays a critical role in democratic transition and consolidation. It is also known as the 'mind industry' precisely because of its power to influence people, where it plays a critical role in articulating and mobilizing public opinion in favour of and against the governments of the day. The message, which in the case of the media is the reporting of an event, is often messy, partisan, and far more sensational and prone to agenda creation than when public broadcasters and newspapers separate news from views. Over time, news and views merge in India and abroad, becoming indistinguishable to the extent that falsehoods or half-truths are peddled as truth in peacetime. The globalization of media and the control and ownership of media further demoted its constructive role in society. Though the media is the fourth estate supposed to strengthen democracy like other institutions such as the legislature, executive, and judiciary, it became increasingly socially exclusionary, diluting social justice principles.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The rise and fall of states in the international system has been an interesting problem that has received attention amongst scholars, policy makers, journalists, politicians and leaders of states. Interestingly there have been numerous attempts that have sought to define, explain and interpret the consequences of these developments that occur in the international system (Chan, 2008:1). Efforts have been made to define 'Great Powers', 'Middle Powers', 'Emerging Powers', 'Small Powers', Super Powers', 'Hegemons' etc, of which the idea of 'Great Power' and 'Emerging Power', receives primary attention in this research. The dramatic rise of China and India in particular, in terms of their economy and military capabilities, has brought about a paradigm shift in terms of thinking of world politics that is coupled with the decline of the US' hegemonic status. Randall Schweller points out that there have been arguments that support the fact of the increasing potential for security competition and war between the US and China and on the other hand he also directs the reader to the optimist's argument that the transition of power would be smooth and evolutionary where there will be efforts towards accommodating these changes that are occurring in the international system. He also points out that there will be efforts by great powers to accept these changes through restraint, reciprocity, cooperation and establish a mutually acceptable order that would benefit all (Schweller, 2011: 285). These complexities make it both interesting as well as a serious concern in terms of peace and security in the world.
