One of the founders of the university of Tübingen, he held a professorial chair of theology there. He was a follower of William of Ockham and is considered one of the last great medieval scholastic thinkers. His Expositio, based on the work of Egeling Becker (d.1481) and first published in 1488, is joined in this post-Tridentine edition by another work on the Mass by Zaccaria Andriani, a canon regular of San Giorgio inAlga, first issued in 1573. This edition carries the name of Pietro Bozzola on the title-page, and that of Tommaso Bazzola in the colophon.Provenance: the partially obscured inscription at the foot of the title-page records that this volume was given in 1584 to the library of the basilica of San Domenico in Bologna by Father Feliciano, a preacher of Sant'Agata. This edition is notable for containing two important Sermones Medicinales, or Plague Sermons: Contra Pestilentiam, and De Fuga Pestis on Folios 144-152, in which BIel discusses, among other things, the question of those fleeing family and home in the wake of the plagues. As one contemporary manuscript put it, "Clever doctors have three golden rules to keep us safe from the pestilence: get out quickly, go a long way off, and don't be in a hurry to get back. " Biel thought this was a coward's way out and presents his case in these remarkable and well-thought out sermons, as befitting "the last of the scholastics. " First of all, Biel was not a medieval naif against scientific medical innovation -- he recognized that medicines have their place, particularly with such horrors as the Plague. But in so doing, he made an interesting observation: We use various medications, that is potions, pills, powders, phlebotomy, fumigations and perfumes And these are good for many, but not for everybody. Sometimes those who are most afraid, and most interested in applying such cures, die among the first ones . (Variis medicinalis decoccionibus utimur, scilicet potionibus, pillulis, pulveribus, phlebotomia, suffumigationibus et odoriferis Et quidem multis hec corporaliter prosunt. Sed non omnibus. Nonnunquam qui magis huiusmodi cure intendunt plurimumque timent moriuntur primi. ) He, of course, goes on to offer what is expected, a spiritual answer: But lest this pestiferous contagion does you harm, I offer you some universal medications stemming from the best supplied pharmacy of the most experienced physician; if you decide to use them, I assure you that this plague cannot do you any harm. (Sed ne contagio hec pestifera vos noceat, afferam vobis medicinas quasdam universales, efficacissimas, de opulentissima medici expertissimi apotheca quibus si uti volueritis, certos vos omnes facio, pestem istam vobis nocere omnino non posse. ) [both passages f.144v] Harm, of course, is defined spiritually. Biel develops the expected idea of the Plague as something of a divine punishment, and a goad for spiritual regeneration, but in a more modern way than many previous expositors. He comes firmly against abandoning the ill, particularly for doctors, but does recognize that flight has its place as well, as long as duty is fulfilled. In effect, flight is a form of medicine, too. He thus advises trust in both scientific and spiritual medicine and concludes with a classic rather Stoic attitude, the calm acceptance of what Fate -- or rather God -- has ordained. This is a handsomely printed book, text printed in a gothic typeface in two columns throughout. Pagination (by folios) is continuous throughout. The De Tempore and the De festivitatibus Cristi are usually separated by another set of sermons but this time, they were obviously printed deliberately together and bound as such -- not in WorldCat in this form. Condition is very good. Binding is strong and handsome. Interior has various bibliographic notes, as well as bookplate from the Oblates of St. Charles (at St. Mary Catholic Church, Bayswater, England) and stamps from a library monastery in Wetterau, possibly the Abbey Arnsburg which had a large collection of books up to the late 1700s. There is a clipping from the Collection a vendre de monumens typographiques, Heinemann, MDCCCXL, no. 606a and 607b referring to the two parts of the book. There is an inscription on the first blank in an early hand that we can't decipher and another on the back leaf in a different hand. Some marginalia in different old hands throughout with occasional underlining to go with the margin notes, one page has an old red ink mark. Some worming throughout. H7 has a corner off at the bottom. The fore-edge has the title and name written (as was common in old libraries). Part of the wood at the back bottom corner is chipped off. Gabriel Biel, (c 1420- 7 December 1495) , was a German scholastic philosopher and member of the Canons Regular of the Congregation of Windesheim. He was one of the founders of the University of Tubingen. Appointed in 1484 as the first professor of theology in the new faculty, he continued to be one of the most celebrated members of its faculty until his death, even serving as Rector in 1484 and 1489. His work consisted in the systematic development of the views of his master, William of Ockham. In later years, he was known as the "last of the Scholastics." A beautiful book, typographically very nicely done, a scarce collection of Biel's sermons from June 1510 (not the later July 1510 most commonly seen) , in a wonderful stamped pigskin binding. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 586 pages.

Fue un gran estudioso de Santo Tomás de Aquino y Guillermo de Ockham y, durante toda su vida, mantuvo una fuerte vinculación a la tradición escolástica. En cuanto a la apariencia de la obra, a comienzos del siglo XVI existió cierta tendencia a 'imitar' las decoraciones de la zona de Basilea en los libros franceses. De hecho, se habla propiamente del 'estilo Basilea' en la ornamentación de algunas obras parisinas. Y se da la circunstancia de que el introductor de dicho estilo en la capital francesa fue precisamente Conrad Resch, impresor de la obra que nos ocupa que estuvo activo en París entre 1516 y 1526. Vorgelegt wird hier die erste kritische Edition von Buch I, das die theologische Prinzipienlehre sowie die Gottes- und Trinitätslehre behandelt. Vorangestellt ist eine lateinischsprachige Einleitung der Herausgeber, die sich vor allem Fragen der Textgestalt und -überlieferung widmet. - Gabriel Biel hat sein Hauptwerk mit Recht als "Collectorium" bezeichnet, denn er hat - in sehr eigenständiger Weise - eine Sammlung und Zusammenfassung der vielfältigen Lehrmeinungen der wesentlichen systematisch-theologischen Richtungen der Scholastik am Ende des Mittelalters versucht. Selbst der skotistisch-ockhamistischen Tradition zugehörig hat Biel daneben die frühfranziskanische, die thomistische, teilweise auch die augustinische Position zu Wort kommen lassen und sich mit ihnen auseinandergesetzt. Durch sein Collectorium, das dem theologischen Unterricht in Erfurt zugrunde lag, ist Biel auch für Luther einer der wichtigsten Vermittler der scholastischen Tradition gewesen und hat die theologischen Anfänge des Reformators mit geprägt. - Die kritische Edition bietet den Text in übersichtlicher, die Kürzel der Frühdrucke auflösender Form und weist die zahlreichen Quellen des Autors nach. Soweit erhalten, werden auch Handschriften für die Edition herangezogen und ausgewertet, so dass Stufen der Entwicklungsgeschichte des Werkes sichtbar werden. - Das erste Buch des "Collectorium" (erarbeitet zwischen 1484 und 1495), das die wesentlichen systematisch-theologischen Lehrmeinungen und Richtungen der Scholastik zusammenfasst, dem theologischen Unterricht in Erfurt zugrunde lag und etwa auch die Theologie Martin Luthers beeinflusste, behandelt 48 Distinctiones in insgesamt 115 Quaestiones.
