Alexander Alexandrovich Blok (28 November [O.S. 16 November] 1880 7 August 1921) was a Russian lyrical poet, writer, publicist, playwright, translator and literary critic. Blok enthusiastically greeted the 1905 Russian Revolution. During the last period of his life, Blok emphasized political themes, pondering the messianic destiny of his country (Vozmezdie, 191021; Rodina, 190716; Skify, 1918). In 1906 he wrote an encomium to Mikhail Bakunin. He had vague apocalyptic apprehensions and often vacillated between hope and despair. He accepted the October Revolution as the final resolution of these apocalyptic yearnings. Because this early show of support, Blok continued to be honored by the Bolsheviks, despite his pre-revolutionary religious imagery, and his later disillusionment. In 1923, Leon Trotsky devoted a whole chapter of his book Literature and Revolution to Blok, saying that "Blok belonged to pre-October literature, but he overcame this, and entered into the sphere of October when he wrote The Twelve. That is why he will occupy a special place in the history of Russian literature." His poem, The Twelve, written in 1918, describes 12 Red Guards in the violent chaos of the Russian Civil War, who are likened to the Apostles, while "Ahead of them, Jesus Christ goes." The Twelve was written in January, 1918, when the revolution which inaugurated the Soviet regime was about two months old. Appearing first in a daily published in what was then Petrograd, it achieved immediate popularity. Although the poem was variously interpreted as a satire on the revolution and a glorification of it, the general estimate of it has come be be that it is the lasting monument to the epoch which gave it birth, the embodiment of the spirit of the time. The Twelve is a controversial long poem by Aleksandr Blok. the poem was one of the first poetic responses to the October Revolution of 1917. The poem describes the march of twelve Red Guards (likened to the Twelve Apostles) through the streets of revolutionary Petrograd, with a fierce winter blizzard raging around them. The mood of the Twelve as conveyed by the poem oscillates from base and even sadistic aggression towards everything perceived bourgeois and counter-revolutionary, to strict discipline and sense of "revolutionary duty." A prostitute who is found with Ivan, who is from the same background as the Twelve but is in no revolutionary mood, is killed by one of the Twelve (Peter), who appears unusually struck by the accident and later reveals to his comrades that he had been in love with the woman. However, after the others remind him that in these revolutionary times one's personal tragedies are nothing, the murderer regains his determination and continues the march. In the last stanza of the poem, most controversially, a figure of Jesus Christ is seen in the snowstorm, heading the march of the Twelve. The Twelve, with its "mood-creating sounds, polyphonic rhythms, and harsh, slangy language", promptly alienated Blok from a mass of his admirers. Accusations ranged from appallingly bad taste to servility before the new Bolshevik authorities and betraying his former ideals. On the other hand, most Bolsheviks scorned Blok's mysticism and asceticism and especially the mention of Christ. Immediately following the publication (3 March 1918) in the socialist revolutionary newspaper "Banner of Labor", the poem was attacked by almost the whole of the Russian intelligentsia. Many of the former admirers, colleagues and even friends of Blok broke off their relationship with him. According to academic Shklovsky few comprehended The Twelve and condemned it because everyone was used to take Blok. George Biddle (illustrator).
