He is enclosing a Post Office Order for a guinea, but, as he 'said to Mr Furnivall last year', he does not consider himself a subscriber, 'wishing to reserve the right of withdrawal in case of finding it inconvenient to pay, which will certainly be the case when I give up my official position'. Nevertheless asks Wheatley to remind him 'when the time comes for collection'. Image on request.

See 'Death of a Bookman' by the novelist Sally Emerson (editor of 'Books and Bookmen' at the time of Dosse's suicide), in Standpoint magazine, October 2018. The present item is 2pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Signed 'Simon Nowell Smith'. He has found Dosse's letter on his return from holiday that day, and states that he is sorry that he 'cannot review Tim Barnes's book on Anglo-American copyright for you as I am already committed to the Book Collector'. He is 'not at all keen to review books nowadays', but will bear in mind Dosse's suggestion and let him know if he hears of 'some forthcoming book in my field which is too expensive for me to buy!' He ends by stating that he is 'more interested in acquiring the book than in a fee'.

Thomas Hartwell Horne. Biblical scholar, bibliographer, and polemicist (DNB) Three pages, 8vo, remnants of laying down process, good condition. He is sending a copy of his "Manual of Parochial Psalmody" and its companion volume, "Selection of Tunes". He also is sending "a copy or two of my little publications. for your own library, which have been received with much favour by the members of our Church." In a lengthy postscript he acknowledges the "Selections" demiertis as his own but a Mr Henshaw, the organist of St Pancras Church "only arranged what the experience of many years had convinced me were favourite - good - & easily executed Church Tunes". He did so well that "one of the most eminent organ-builders has adapted his barrel church organ to Mr Henshaws arrangement.".

He is grateful to Collins 'for pointing out the careless grammatical mistake of mine in the SUNDAY TIMES review. It is only too easy to slip into a conversational style (for I think that what I meant was perfectly clear) when writing rapid condensations for a newspaper. But of course you are perfectly right about the word otherwise.' He ends (perhaps with a hint of irony): 'I am sending an order to Longmans for a copy of THE CHOICE OF WORDS.' Collins's book had been published in the previous year.

Reads: 'Dear Sir, / It occurs to me that I left my black cane at your house when I was with you yesterday. If so, would you give it to the bearer of this note / Yr's thankfully / A Egerton Brydges'.
