Bianchi, Luca, ed. Christian readings of Aristotle from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Turnhout: Brepols, 2011, 442pp., sewn PAPERBACK, very good, TEXTS IN FRENCH, ENGLISH, ITALIAN, and LATIN. Studia artistarum, 29. Widely recognized as one of the main characteristics of Latin Aristotelianism, the 'Christianisation' of Aristotle from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century has received as yet little attention. Aiming to answer the need for a more systematic investigation, the articles here collected approach Christian readings of the Stagirite's works from different perspectives. Setting aside abstract discussions about degrees of orthodoxy, they address a few specific questions: which images of Aristotle were offered by Medieval and Renaissance interpreters, and in particular how did some of them argue that - far from being a pagan or even an impious thinker - he did not contradict the truths revealed by Holy Scripture? - CONTENTS: Aristotele e l'empireo / Gianfranco Fioravanti -- Ruggero Bacone e l' "Aristotele" del Secretum secretorum / Chiara Crisciani -- Sauver le dieu du philosophe : Albert le Grand, Thomas d'Aquin, Guillaume de Moerbeke et l'invention du Liber de bona fortuna comme alternative autorisée à l'interprétation averroïste de la théorie aristotélicienne de la providence divine / Valérie Cordonier -- Du bon usage des grecs et des arabes : réflexions sur la censure de 1277 / Dragos Calma -- The chicken and the egg (suppositis fundamentis philosophi) : Henry of Ghent, Siger of Brabant and the eternity of species / Pasquale Porro -- Autour de deux commentaires inédits sur l'Éthique à Nicomaque : Gilles d'Orléans et l'Anonyme d'Erfurt / Iacopo Costa -- Searching for an uneasy synthesis between Aristotelian political language and Christian political theology / Stefano Simonetta -- Considerazioni sulla "cristianizzazione" di Aristotele in alcuni commenti di Marsilio di Inghen / Amos Corbini -- "Sempre alla pietà et buoni costumi ha exortato le genti" : Aristotle in the milieu of Cardinal Contarini (d. 1542) / Pietro B. Rossi -- "Reducing Aristotle's doctrine to simple truth" : Cesare Crivellati and his struggle against the "Averroists" / Luca Bianchi. ISBN 9782503542379. …

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This volume is based on an international colloquium held at the Warburg Institute, London, on 21-2 June 2013, and entitled 'Philosophy and Knowledge in the Renaissance: Interpreting Aristotle in the Vernacular'. It situates and explores vernacular Aristotelianism in a broad chronological context, with a geographical focus on Italy. The disciplines covered include political thought, ethics, poetics, rhetoric, logic, natural philosophy, cosmology, meteorology and metaphysics; and among the genres considered are translations, popularizing commentaries, dialogues and works targeted at women. The wide-ranging and rich material presented in the volume is intended to stimulate scholars to develop this promising area of research still further.
