Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. First Edition / Prima Edizione. Octavo (8vo). 435 pp. Written entirely in Italian. An authentic, complete 18th-century hagiography detailing the life, virtues, and miracles of the Theatine priest Blessed Giovanni Marinoni (1490-1552), published in Venice just one year after his official beatification by Pope Clement XIII in 1762. The work is written by his fellow order member, Father Ignazio Lodovico Bianchi, and contains the highly detailed Venetian church and state licensing approvals (Imprimatur) from the Riformatori dello Studio di Padova, bearing the recorded names of high-ranking Venetian patricians including Sebastian Justinian, Alvise Mocenigo, and Polo Renier (the future Doge of Venice). Concludes with the original index and a two-page Errata Corrige (Corrections) sheet. Illustrations:Features highly detailed, full-page copperplate engravings (incisioni) on separate inserts depicting major milestones and mystical events from Marinoni's ministry, including his Eucharistic miracle converting doubters in Venice, his theological triumph over the Protestant reformers (Ochino, Vermigli, and Valdés) in Naples via the allegory of the seven-headed Hydra, and his mystical deathbed ecstasy attended by Saint Andrew Avellino. Interior: Pages are complete, intact, and well-preserved on strong, handmade 18th-century rag paper. Exhibits typical and expected age-related ink offsetting/ghost printing onto opposing blank pages from the original oil-based inks. Text and engravings remain sharp, bold, and fully legible. Binding: Bound in a handsome 18th-century contemporary half-calf leather binding. The spine and protective corners are finished in brown calf leather, paired with striking pink and green hand-marbled paper-covered boards. The spine features intricate gilt-stamped borders and decorative motifs alongside its original dark leather label reading "VITA B. G. MARINONI". The marbled paper covering shows typical surface scuffing, minor paper loss, and edge wear consistent with its age. The leather corners and spine show honest rubbing, with light wear at the head and foot of the spine, but the binding remains solid, square, and structurally secure. The text block edges remain in their natural state, uncolored and unmarbled, showing light, age-appropriate toning but remaining remarkably clean and free of heavy foxing or liquid staining.
