Soft cover. Zustand: New. This is an important little book based on lectures delivered at a celebration in honour of Professor KN Panikkar's 85th birthday. Popularly known as KN, he is perhaps the most well known figure in Kerala, with a huge reputation as public intellectual throughout the country. It is fitting that the scholars invited to celebrate his life and work should themselves be significant scholars who have made communication with a wider readership and audience a part of their academic endeavour, and like KN, stand for for the causes of secularism and democracy in this country. The presentations in this slim volume include weighty, but lucidly expressed thoughts on issues of contemporary concern and their historical and social and economic background. The history of dissent in ancient Indian history and its relevance today for democratic alternatives to the current regimes, the significance of the legacies of the national movement that are abiding, the modern weight of neoliberal policies of the last few decades and the necessity for fighting them in order to make a breakthrough in the current political and social impasse, and the experience with secularism and democracy in the post independence era are brought into focus to understand the crisis of Indian democracy, the prevalence of fascistic tendencies under the Modi regime, and the directions needed for a more humane society and polity.

"n this collection of essays, Bhargava answers important questions related to Political Theory and its aims. The aim of political theory, he says, is not only to clear up conceptual muddles but to reason systematically and ethically about some of the major social and political problems we face, to illuminate which ethical values are relevant to the context and why, and to give some direction to what we should do. Using the tools of political theory, he tells us the value and dangers of multiculturalism, the significance of political secularism in religiously diverse societies, the continuing relevance of some socialist ideas and explains why modernity must not be viewed only as a monolithic, homogenizing process. He asks what, if any, the cultural injustices of colonialism are and how we should respond to them, assesses the value of institutions such as Truth and Reconciliation in societies that have gone through violence and injustice on a massive scale, argues why it is urgent to jettison stereotypes of one another held by religious and secular persons, clarifies the importance of free expression in democratic societies, and how the state should act amidst growing intolerance and offers a morally complex reflection on 9/11. The book also includes philosophical essays on the methodology of social science. " (Publisher).

Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. The last few decades have witnessed a shift towards a more balanced view in political theory and social science, one that acknowledges the cultural dimension of politics and the political dimension of culture. The essays in this volume reflect this shift by bringing together a number of inter-related themes of the multicultural perspective, such as the need for a stable identity; the link between identity, recognition, and cultural community; and the importance of belonging and cultural particularity. Significant questions are raised and discussed: What does it mean to recognize cultural communities? How can multiculturalism be prevented from being hierarchical and authoritarian? Can it be made liberal and democratic?

Soft cover. Zustand: New. India's collective ethical identity is under duress. We don't seem to currently agree on what our collective good is. Some groups believe that India is finally rediscovering its Hindu identity and becoming a great nation-state. For others, this change has brought us on the verge of losing our civilisational character of being inclusive but not any less Hindu. Is it possible to bring these groups with divergent views to discuss each other's point of view? And do so reasonably, with an open mind? Rajeev Bhargava thinks it is. He believes that the legitimate concerns of all those disenchanted with the idea of an inclusive, pluralist India can actually be addressed within the basic framework of India's constitutional democracy. Through these short, elegant and lucid reflections on contemporary events, he takes the readers to the founding narrative of the republic and clarifies its ethical ideals. Readers are asked to join the process of reflection, to criticise with empathy, particularly where the moral compass to properly guide individual and collective action is lost and offer positive appraisals where due. If we get the fundamentals of our original ethical vision right, then, Bhargava subtly suggests, we might yet save our country from further polarisation and may even heal some of its divisions.
