The explanatory book is paperback, with Beyer (and Samuel Mordecai's) descriptions of the plates. 40 pages. Everything here is the 1980 Virginia State Library archival reprint. The prints are in full color, with ISBN and VA State Library copyright and plate number on the bottom left. Prints measure 17 x 12 inches, with wide margins, and a printed area of about 8 x 12 inches. All 40 plates are present and in excellent condition. The box is in great shape too, with just a dusty shadow on it from a long life on a wide shelf. Originally printed in 1858 and now extremely rare, this reprint is already 44 years old itself & increasingly hard to find. Please email with questions or to request photos. Loeillot (some mainly marginal spotting to the early plates, one or two short marginal tears and stains). Modern half brown morocco gilt, over original cloth covers; modern red morocco slipcase. An attractive album of scenic Virginia after drawings by Beyer, a graduate of the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts, during a three-year tour of the "Old Dominion" in the 1850s. Including views of local therapeutic and mineral springs, natural bridges, Harper's Ferry, and views from local Otter and Hawk's nest peaks. Spotted colour tinted lithographic vignette title-page and 40 SPOTTED and dampstained colour tinted lithographic plates after Beyer by Rau & Son and A. v. W. Loeillot (each plate laid down on heavier stock). Original half black morocco, black cloth decorated in gilt and blind (rebacked, endpapers renewed, scuffed). First edition, of this album of lithographic views of Virginia by a German artist resident from 1854-1856. Beyer, a graduate of Dusseldorf Academy of Art, first traveled to America in 1848, at first settling in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He visited Virginia in 1854 and stayed until about 1856 or 1857 sketching and painting a number of scenes that would appear in the present work, after the publication of which he returned to Germany. The scenes depicted in the album include: the Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County, Harper's Ferry, Kanawha Fall, Old Point Comfort, James River Canal; spelunking scenes in Weyer's Cave; and resorts and natural springs such as Stribling Springs, White Sulphur Spring, Hot Springs. It is conceivable that one of the reasons, beyond their obvious beauty, that Beyer depicted so many natural springs and resorts is because of his wife's ailing health. The title-page vignettes include Monticello and Mount Vernon. Howes mentions an 1836 issue although this is likely a ghost as no copies are located by him or more recent bibliographers.
