Collated, complete.A fascinating account of the author's travels in Egypt and Italy, gathered from his diary. Comprising descriptions of the harbour of Alexandria, the Baths of Cleopatra, Suez, the Nile steam boat, domestic cookery, the cafes of Venice, journey to Florence, and much more.There is little recorded information about the author Samuel Bevan. He was born in 1816 possibly in Wales and became an engineer of the railroads. He sometimes wrote under the pseudonym Cavendish. This title is his most notable work.From the library of Gertrude Gwendolen Bevan Crewdson (1872-1913), an Egyptologist and administrator and benefactor of Girton College, Cambridge. It is unclear if she shares relations with the author (neither of her parents use Bevan or have notable relations linked to this surname), but a charming coincidence nevertheless. Crewdson travelled around Greece, Crete, Sweden and Norway as well as spending six months inKhartoum. She bought many items at the sale hall of theCairo Museum, which she subsequently left to Girton College. She was also responsible for the college buying the mummified remains ofHermione Grammatikein 1911, by raising the sum of £20 (the equivalent of £1,825 in 2022) to buy it fromWilliam Petrie.Two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. With additional advertisement leaf bound in following. Rebacked, retaining the original boards with the original backstrip laid down.Externally, with rubbing to the extremities and loss to the head and tail of the original backstrip. Marks to the boards.
