Vintage reference photograph from the 1952 Western, showing actor Jeff Chandler in redface as Apache chief Cochise. Annotations in manuscript ink and pencil, printed mimeo snipe, date stamp, and provenance stamps and labels on the verso. Based loosely on the events of the 1861 Bascomb Affair and the 1862 Battle of Apache Pass, during which Native Americans first encountered howitzers and other modern artillery after the reigning Union government breached several existing treaties and sparked a conflict that resulted in 25 years of Apache unrest. Chandler's second performance as Cochise, following "Broken Arrow" (1950). From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. Set in the New Mexico Territory during the Civil War, shot on location in Utah. 8 x 9.5 inches, trimmed irregularly. Very Good, moderately worn.
