With four black and white illustrations including frontispiece by Leo Bates. ***Very good in grey cloth-covered boards with black titles and illustrations to the spine and front board. The boards are clean and unmarked, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Page block edges clean - just slightly foxed on the fore-edge. Slight reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with a contemporaneous owner's name and address in ink on the front free endpaper - 'Ida Brown, Rosederne 132 Melton Rd, West Bridgford, Nottingham.' Also, a period bookseller's label on the back pastedown: 'Sisson & Parker, Booksellers & Stationers, Nottingham'. Slight offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise pages clean - paper stock just slightly tanned. ***In a good original colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has quite a large area of loss at the head of the spine, with some loss of the lettering. A smaller area of loss to the tail of the spine. Scuff patch to the front panel. Edges of dustwrapper slightly creased and rubbed. Tiny nicks to bottom edge of the back panel, which is also a bit discoloured (being a white background). Colour illustrations to the spine and front board still bright. ***192mm x 132mm. 256 pages. ***'A girl braves an erupting volcano to prove that her deceased father was innocent of stealing bonds from his company.' ***'Bessie Marchant (1862-1941) was a prolific English writer of adventure novels featuring young female heroines. She published most of her work under the name Bessie Marchant, but occasionally published as Bessie Marchant Comfort or Mrs J.A. Comfort, and a few books for boys, published under the name John Comfort, are attributed to her. Despite never leaving England herself, she wrote close to 150 novels set in locations around the world.'
