Hardback. Zustand: New. In 1204, brothers Alexios and David Komnenos became the unwitting founders of the Empire of Trebizond, a successor state to the Byzantine Empire that emerged after Crusaders sacked Constantinople. Trebizond, which stretched along the coast of the Black Sea, outlasted numerous rivals and invaders until its fall to the Ottoman Turks in 1461. Though this empire has fascinated writers from Cervantes to Dorothy Dunnett, few Trapezuntine writings survive. This volume presents translations from the Greek of two crucial primary sources published together for the first time: On the Emperors of Trebizond and Encomium on Trebizond. In the fourteenth century, Michael Panaretos, the emperor's personal secretary, penned the only extant history of the ruling dynasty, including key details about foreign relations. The encomium by Bessarion (1403-1472), here in English for the first time, praises the author's native city and retells Trapezuntine history from antiquity to his own moment. It provides enlightening perspectives on Byzantine identity and illuminating views of this major trading hub along the Silk Road.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This is a short document, chronicling the death of the 3rd to last Eastern Roman Emperor, Manuel II. He laments that the Emperor died too soon and grants a litany of his accomplishment during his reign over the fragile fragments of the Roman state. Bessarion preserves this text in Latin, as the future Imperial administration under his son John VIII, would look to the Papacy and the Italian states for political protection.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This is a collection of nine ecclesial acts, composed by the Cardinal John Bessarion, relating to the fate of some churches under Greek jurisdiction and what their fate will be because of the contemporary fate of the late Eastern Roman Empire. Select Acts grant some insight into the deteriorating state of the late Byzantine church, and the short lived attempt to achieve full union between the Catholic and Orthodox faiths following the conclusion of the Council of Florence in 1439 AD.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This medieval work explores the theological debate surrounding the procession of the Holy Spirit within the Christian Trinity. Maximus Planudes argues against the notion that the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son, reasoning that such a dual procession would imply a double Spirit, which is illogical. Demetrius Cydonius criticizes Planudes for his weak arguments and suggests his motives might be fear-driven. Bessarion responds by explaining that the procession is one and the same, as the Father and Son are one in substance, producing the Spirit through a single divine operation. Peter Argyropoulos supports this view, referencing Augustine to emphasize the unity of the Holy Spirit as proceeding from both the Father and the Son, reflecting the unity of the Church.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Bessarion (sometimes with the prenomen John of Basil), the famous Greek Orthodox bishop who involved himself in ecumenical dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church composed this work of apologetics, following the failed union of churches at the Council of Florence. He attempts to report on and display the common doctrinal ground that is at the root of East-West Christian dialogue to his fellow Greek bishops, many of whom were living in exile, or under Turkish domination. His primary opponent in this text is the Byzantine scholar Gregory Palamas, who firmly denied the validity of the Latin filoque.…
