Orange printed wrappers. Page dimensions: 213 x 136mm. An important publication in the history of New Zealand literary culture. "The Phoenix" was a literary magazine with high aesthetic ideals, which only survived for four issues. The typography of the first two issues was done by Bob Lowry and G. M. Bertram. Title page printed in two colours, with a woodcut phoenix illustration in maroon. With linocuts Neil Johnstone (frontispiece), L. D. Morrison (tipped in at page 17), and Cyril Whitmore (page 49). This issue includes the short story "His End was Peace" by R.A.K. Mason. Also containing literary reviews and enthused musings - "The 'Phoenix', we hope, will not become a pale reflex of the 'Adelphi', nor the Literary Club a temple wherein the names of Middleton Murry and D. H. Lawrence are intoned with a holy reverence alike by those who have read them and those who have not." - page 37. "Poetry had a flowering in Auckland in the 1930s when the work of A. R. D. Fairburn, Allen Curnow and R. A. K. Mason among others appeared in the magazine 'Phoenix.'" - from a 1957 newspaper obituary column for A. R. D. Fairburn.
