The text for the four volumes in the series was published between 1781 and 1786; the plates were issued in livraisons from March 1778 onwards.JIoli Vingopoulou: Jean-Claude Richard, abbé de Saint-Non (1727-1791) was a French clergyman, engraver and painter. He was exiled from Paris for political reasons and lived from then onwards in Poitiers. EventuAlly, he made the choice to devote himself to his artistic interests (art, archaeology and music), and thus resigned from his public office as a judge. After 1759 Saint-Non lived in England for some time, and later moved to Italy (1759-1761). He traveled to Naples and Sicily with painter Fragonard and H. Robert. He released first his drawings of the monuments of Rome, which soon won over the public; thus, in 1777 he was able to publish his account and drawings of the "enchanting" journey to Magna Graecia. After ensuring financial support from sponsors, he prepared this five-volume work with enthusiasm, in spite of the difficulties which arose (1781-1786). The chronicle is comprised of Saint-Non's texts (a review of the history of Southern Italy and studies on Naples, Pompey, Herculanum and their neighbouring areas), and the corresponding plates. Incisione originale eseguita all`acquaforte su matrice di rame , sotto al parte figurata, indicazioni degli artisti e titolo. L`opera, di raffinata fattura e assai interessante dal punto di vista iconografico, rappresenta l`ingresso delle truppe della Repubblica Francese in Torino, avvenuto il 10 dicembre 1798; le armate a cavallo e a piedi sono disposte nel primo e nel secondo piano, mentre sullo sfondo si delinea la città, colta dal lato di Porta Susina, con la Cittadella a destra. La tavola è tratta da un disegno di Carle Vernet, membro di una importante famiglia di pittori francesi. La trasposizione dell`invenzione disegnativa su lastra spetta a J. Duplessis-Bertaux, un pittore, disegnatore e incisore transalpino che fu allievo di J. M. Wien e di J. Ph. Le Bas, e che insegnò alla Scuola Militare di Parigi. Come è indicato nella legenda sottostante l`immagine, l`incisione fu terminata da J. Bosq. La studiosa A. Peyrot segnala due stati dell`opera: il primo eseguito all`acquaforte pura, il secondo con ritocchi all`acquatinta. Esemplare in buone condizioni conservative.
