Cloth. Zustand: Good. Bertall [Charles Albert d'Arnoux] (illustrator). An uncommon copy of this collection of stories and lessons for children, by educator and social activist Marie Pape-Carpantier. The fifth edition of this work in the original moire silk binding. Ink inscription to the first blank page, dated 1882. Marie Pape-Carpantier (18151878) was a French educator who revolutionised education in French schools. She worked hard to alleviate poverty and social injustice, and to encourage female education. This work contains a collection of her stories, providing lessons for children. Illustrated throughout by Bertall, otherwise known as Charles Albert d'Arnoux (1820-1882). In the original moire silk binding. Externally, bumped to the extremities with shelf wear to the boards and spine. A couple of small losses to the silk of the head and tail of the spine. Silk is lifting to the tail of the spine. Front hinge is strained but held firmly by cords. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright but with the odd spot throughout. Ink inscription to the first blank page. Ink inscription and markings to the title page. Doodles in colour pencil to the front paste down and rear free end paper. Closed tear to the front free end paper. Good. book.

Boards lightly worn and rubbed at edges and spine joints and ends, rubbed through at rounded corners, cracked at head of spine. Backstrip partially detached from text block at front endpapers. Some very faint and occasional spotting, else internally neat, clean, bright and robust. Charles Albert d'Arnoux, who used the pseudonym Bertall, was a French illustrator, cartoonist and writer. Known as one of the most prolific illustrators of the 19th century and a pioneer of photography. Bertall illustrated works by Balzac, Dumas, Cooper and Perrault, and many others.

Charles Albert d'Arnoux, genannt Bertall (Paris 1820 - 1882 Soyons) war Karikaturist, Zeichner und Radierer, außerdem zählt er zu den Pionieren der Fotografie. Er machte zahlreiche Illustrationen für "Les Romans populaires illustrés". Als Karikaturist war er unter anderem für "Journal pour rire" und "Le Grelot" tätig.- Papier etw. gebräunt und vereinzelt gering fleckig.

Etwas größere Leinenbände der Zeit mit goldgeprägten Rücken und blindgeprägten Deckeln. Die Ausgabe erschien ursprünglich in broschierten Lieferungen mit einer Umschlagillustration, die bei gebundenen Exemplaren nur selten erhalten ist, in unserem Fall jedoch jeweils auf den vorderen Innendeckel montiert wurde. Die Tafeln wurden nach der Auflistung bei Brivois kollationiert und sind vollständig vorhanden. Es fehlt lediglich der nur einem geringen Teil der Auflage beigegebene achtteilige Plan von Paris.
