The specimens and (or) photographs of the 21 named taxa used for California Holocene olivellids were examined to recognize four modern species now assigned to the genus Callianax and one species presumed extinct. The California Holocene species include C. alectona, C. biplicata, C. C. diegensis, and C. strigata, while the extinct species is Olivella pedroana. Other olivellid names previously used in California are also discussed and these include O. baetica, O. niplicata alba, O. biplicata angelana, O. biplicata brunnea, O. biplicata fucana, O. biplicata lapillus, O. biplicata parva, O. boetica, O. boetica diegenensis, O. boetica mexicana, O. dama, O. glandinaria, O. intorta, O. minuta, O. nota, O. porteri, and O. pycna. Olivella dama and O. intorta are valid species that occur further south in Mexico and are not present in California today despite reports. Although the southern Californian coast is known for its magnificent scenery and impressive beaches, it also is known to house one of the most spectacular molluscan faunas found anywhere on Earth. Of the molluscan assemblages found along coastal areas of the United States, those of southern California stand out as unique in having the largest number of abalone species (family Haliotidae), the largest number of regionally-restricted murex species (family Muricidae), and the largest number of chitons (Class Polyplacophora), along with containing over 2,000 other microscopic and macroscopic species. It has been over 40 years since anyone has attempted to document this amazingly rich and beautiful molluscan fauna, leaving a large void in the literature of the West Coast marine invertebrates. Besides containing a visiually-stunning iconography of the regional molluscan fauna, the new book offers the first up-to-date synthesis of the molluscan biogeographical patterns seen along the coasts of southern California and the western side of Baja California, Mexico. The Living and Fossil Busycon Whelks: Iconic Mollusks of Eastern North America, is the seminal book on Busycon whelks, including all 17 living species and over 100 fossil species. The book contains over 120 color plates and maps with pictures of these fascinating shells. A trip to an open shoreline anywhere along the eastern United States will quickly introduce a beachcomber to the busycon whelks. Although the busycon whelks are recognized as being one of the most conspicuous and common groups of marine mollusks in eastern North America, their systematic classification and taxonomic nomenclature was uncertain at best. Recent biodiversity studies, reported here for the first time, have shown that the molluscan fauna of the Gulf of Mexico is far richer and more complex than previously thought. As a result of these new discoveries, the Gulf malacofauna is shown to contain large numbers of endemic species that reside within four separate biogeographical subdivisions of the larger Carolinian Molluscan Province; the Floridian, Suwannean, Texan, and Yucatanean Subprovinces. These four Gulf biotic components, with each supporting its own endemic fauna, are shown here to be separated by distinct ecological and oceanographic barriers. The resultant physical and genetic isolation has led to the evolution of spectacular sibling species radiations, many unknown and undescribed until now. Some of the most conspicuous and important of these are found in the gastropod families Fasciolariidae, Volutidae, Conidae, Muricidae, and Busyconidae, all of which are dominant predators in their respective benthonic ecosystems. The species within these ecologically important families, along with hundreds of endemic taxa in 50 other gastropod and bivalve families, are illustrated here on 132 colour plates and are discussed in detail in the individual chapters. In the Miocene and Pliocene fossil shell beds of the eastern United States, the single most spectacular molluscan species radiation is seen in the ecphora shells (the Tribe Ecphorini). These bizarrely shaped gastropods, with their distinctive ribbed shell sculpture, represent a separate branch of the Subfamily Ocenebridae, Family Muricidae. Characteristically, these muricid gastropods are heavily ornamented with spiral ribs and cords and are considered some of the most beautiful and interesting groups of fossil molluscs found along the Atlantic Coastal Plain and Floridian Peninsula.
