Map, black and white photographic plates, 191pp, pictorial covers a little sunned along the spine and adjacent sections of covers, school prize label on front free endpaper,removed, half title and lower endpaper lightly foxed, occasional light browning. Text clean and sound. Original attractive pictorial cloth with light signs of wear. Good copy. Reverend Upward was a missionary in Hankow, in this book he aimed to give young people an idea of the experiences he and his fellow missionaries had in Central China. Filled with ancedotal stories of local people and views on Chinese history and society.

Bound in original illustrated red cloth, lettered in black. With frontispiece and 9 further illustrations on seven plates from photographs by the author. The author was with the L.M.S. in Hankow from 1905-1925, and from his base on the Yangtze River he was witness to the outbreak of the Revolution. He gives a day-by-day account of the battles between the Imperial Army and the revolutionary mutineers from October 1911 in Wuchang to the looting and burning of Hankow and the fall of Hanyang. A valuable first hand account of events. Boards a little grubby, but overall in Very Good Plus condition.
