George Arbuthnott Jarrett was one of the most striking debuts in English fiction in the 1960s. There was nothing in Bernard Toms' background to suggest that this ex-RAF mechanic and former Metropolitan Police officer had a work of such intensity and originality in him. The two minds take very different views on even the simplest things. Arbuthnott sees an old newspaper poster floating in the river, turning to pulp. George "sees it as rotting human flesh; it forms the tortured, writhing face of Eve in our dream. " Arbuthnott struggles to stick to a routine, to get to work on time and behave as a good employee. Described by the TLS as 'an autobiography of the super-ego', Toms' debut departs from other split-personality novels in allowing the two halves ('Arbuthnott', the conscientious Catholic, and 'George', the roiling id) to be in explicit dialogue with one another and to both be sympathetic to the reader. George is no Jekyll, and which of us hasn't at some point grown weary of 'Washing up after dinner, watching telly, mending and tinkering, assembling and re-assembling; anything to keep sane. I'd rather be shot from a cannon'? Of course, when the internal dialogue breaks down, the results are compelling for the reader and disastrous for the narrator. An extremely well-written and promising debut with some excellent descriptions of 1960s London. Toms, a former policeman and RAF mechanic, wrote one other novel (Strange Affair, based on the life of Harold 'Tanky' Challenor) and undertook some ghost-writing before dying in undeserved obscurity in 1990 at the age of 57.
