Written in defiance of Jeremy Collier and the budding fashion for sentimental drama, this late Restoration comedy exposes the reformed rake Loveless to the temptations of London and the charms of a merry widow, neither of which he is able to withstand. More memorable than the straying husband, however, is Restoration comedy's ultimate follower of fashion, Lord Foppington, who defends himself in the Epilogue by observing that no highwayman or Jacobite was ever well dressed. As the introduction to this edition argues, Sir John Vanbrugh - dramatist, architect and member of the influential Kit Cat Club - presents courtship and marriage not only with cynicism, but also with moral bravery and social impudence; qualities not much in evidence in his sentimental rivals. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

2pp., 12mo. On bifolium. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'J. B. Burke' and signed 'H. Appleton' (a member of the Boston firm of publishers?). The letter reads: 'My dear Sir | I find that the 2d. part of your work "The visitation of Great Britain" has been published some time but I have not received mine. Will you be good enough to put one under cover with my name & an outer cover to address of the Hon Abbott Laurence Boston [businessman and philanthropist], and send it to John Miller Esq. No: 24 Henrietta St. Covent Garden, and I shall be sure to get it.' Miller, who traded from a variety of different addresses during a long career (see BBTI, where his details appear to be included in two or more entries), apparently ending in bankruptcy in 1865, was known as 'the American bookseller in London'.

12mo, 3 pp. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Attractive red letterhead, in the Arts and Crafts style. The writings she referred to in a previous letter have not come. 'You probably forgot to enclose them. I expect to read some of the papers in the days when I look in the P[all]. M[all]. G[azette].' He asks her to give him 'an idea of what the publisher proposes to spend on the illustrations, and also the size of them, and the style - pen & ink, or "wash".' He has heard news of her 'from Welsh, Ethel Johnson's husband, who is with me at the Haymarket'. COPAC does not appear to provide any information regarding a work on which Patridge collaborated with a Miss Smith during this period.

See his entry, and Swan's, in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. Seventeen stylish lines with bold signature. On first leaf of a bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Addressed to 'Dear Mrs Swan' and signed 'Frank Dicksee'. Her letter gave him great pleasure and he has just had the opportunity of placing her 'very kind offer before the Council [of the Royal Academy]'. 'I need hardly tell you they are delighted to accept this valuable gift. & I am asked to tender you our warmest Thanks - since your husband died - Death has taken heavy toll of our members - but there are still some - & I am one - who will greatly appreciate this bust on personal grounds - & for the rest it will always remain a fine work of Art - & the portrait of a distinguished member of the Academy'. He ends with renewed thanks.

Because of the 'Very great outlay attending the production of the work at the onset', asks for a year's advance subscription of £1 10s 0d. Gives the publication date, adding 'from the distinguished literary aid I have received I am sanguine enough to hope that it will meet your full approval'.

11pp., folio. On eleven leaves of wove paper. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, the leaves attched with a rusty pin. An unsigned draft, with deletions and emendations throughout, and the date left incomplete at the end. The document begins: 'To all to whom these presents may come I Richard Harington of Lincoln's Inn in the County of Middlesex Esq. Barrister at law send greeting'. He explains the background, and how he has been appointed arbitrator following a tial at Nisi Prius 'held at West[minster]: Hall in the County of Middlesex on Tuesday the 2nd day of May AD 1871 before the Hon Sir Anthony Cleasby Knight one of the Barons of Her Majesty's Court of Exchequer'. It is only on p.8 that he publishes his award: 'I do find adjudge order award and determine that the sd Bernard Goldschmidt had not at the commencement of the sd action of Goldschmidt v Meadows any good cause of action agst the sd John Meadows'. He directs that Goldschmidt 'deliver to the sd John Meadows or his order at Birmingham in the County of Warwick 1053 guns found of the 1600 guns delivered by or on behalf of the sd John Meadows to the sd Bernard Goldschmidt before the commencement of the sd actions as afd such 1100 guns being at the time of compliance with this order & direction in the same state & condition in all respects as they were at the time of the giving of such copy of this my award'. If Goldschmidt complies, the original award of £3000 against him will be reduced to £1100, but he will be liable for all costs. From the papers of Sir Richard Harington of Ridlington (who succeeded to the title in 1877). The Harington papers contain another item (offered separately) relating to the case, a report to Harington on the whereabouts and condition of the guns by the noted Birmingham gunmaker William Tranter (1816-1890). .
