Hardcover, bound in green cloth with a printed yellow title label on the front cover. The covers are rubbed and soiled and the spine darkened and the spine's label has perished. 127 & [1] pages, illustrated with a portrait frontispiece. There is some occasional minor staining and foxing. Good. First edition. Inscribed by the author's father on the front endpaper, "Professor A.C. Cheeto, D.D., with the warmest affection and regard of the Author's Father, Nov. 2nd. 1917". Additionally laid in is a 7-1/2 inch high by 4-3/4 inch wide sheet of paper, with a tan watercolor background, upon which the author's sister has penned an inscription, "Dr. Hamilton Wegle, with kind regards from Marjorie Trotter, the author's sister". "Since the Author did not live to gather his verses together for publication in book form, upon others has fallen the double task of selecting these poems from the much larger number which he wrote, and of arranging them as they are here presented." [Quoted from the foreword]. Like Walter Blythe, the Canadian poet Bernard Freeman Trotter (1890-1917) was initially kept from joining the war due to his health. However, Trotter was determined to serve and won a commission in the British army. Deployed to France with his Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed by a shell seven months later. His father, the Baptist minister and McMaster professor Thomas Trotter, collected and had his poems published in 1917.…
