An uncommon handmade card from the father of Californian assemblage. Berman was an early practitioner of mail art. The networks of association available to him through the post were central to his work, including his publication of the cult magazine Semina, which he circulated to friends. Though this example is not addressed, the partial cancellation stamp suggests it was posted. The card has an image of a Greek statue; an ink stamp sends "love from the Bermans". Wallace and Shirley Berman "were an inimitable, stylish couple with a natural porosity for the marginal and esoteric who personified Californian post-war bohemianism" (ArtForum online). Gelatin silver photograph (148 x 36 mm) mounted on thick card (99 x 77 mm), "love from the Bermans" stamped in red ink, partial postage cancellation stamp in black ink across head of card and photograph.
