Wrappers bit frayed. - De econoom Norbert Pieter van den Berg (1831-1917), de latere president van De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) van 1891 tot 1912 hield zich intensief bezig met monetaire vraagstukken.Dit werk "De muntquaestie met betr…ekking tot Indië" richt zich op de monetaire uitdagingen en beleidskwesties in de kolonie. In 1872-1873 voerde Nederland een belangrijke monetaire hervorming door, waarbij het in 1875 definitief overstapte van een bimetallisch stelsel (zilver én goud) naar een goudstandaard. Dit betekende dat de waarde van de gulden voortaan uitsluitend gekoppeld werd aan goud. Het zilveren betaalmiddel werd hierdoor gedegradeerd tot 'hulpmunten' (alleen nog geschikt voor kleine betalingen). Dit in navolging van landen als het Verenigd Koninkrijk (al sinds 1816) en Duitsland (vanaf 1871). In Nederlands-Indië (toen nog met een zilverstandaard) ontstonden direct problemen, want Indië bleef functioneel vastzitten aan zilver. Dit zorgde voor een wisselkoersprobleem tussen Nederland en Nederlandsch-Indië, waardoor de waarde van Indische gulden sterk daalde en de import duurder werd en de export minder opleverde. De Nederlandse regering wilde uniformiteit in monetair beleid, maar Indië had baat bij de zilverstandaard vanwege zijn handelsrelaties met andere Aziatische zilverlanden (zoals China). De monetaire kloof tussen kolonie en moederland werd pas in 1901 gedeeltelijk gedicht toen Indië overstapte op een goud-zilver hybride systeem (gulden gekoppeld aan de Mexicaanse zilveren dollar).
