Zustand: Very good. Wimbledon: circa [1890-1893]., [1890-1893]. Very good. - 34 words penned on her personal 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide "8, North View, The Common, Wimbledon" letterhead with black borders. Signed in full "Josephine E Butler". Addressed to a supporter "Dear Mrs Barran I thank you much for your kind gift of 10/ towards the special expenses of our Congress at Brussels, wch is likely to be a very important one." The recipient has penned in the date "Sept 19" at the top of the letter. The letter is mounted with glue from the verso on a stiff sheet excised from a scrapbook. Mounted on the verso of the sheet are the autographs of the Bishop of Natal John Colenso, the Archbishop of Armagh Marcus Beresford, and the Bishop of Chester William Jacobson. Very good. Having become aware of the human trafficking of young women into prostitution in Brussels, the social reformer and feminist Josephine Butler (1828-1906) became active in combating this form of modern-day slavery. In 1880 she traveled to Brussels and gathered information that was used to prosecute those who were complicit in the trade. Thus began an international campaign spreading from Belgium in 1880 to Great Britain in 1885, to France in 1902 and to the United States in 1907. The "Congress at Brussels" referred to in the letter may well be the Brussels 1890 "Convention Relative to the Slave Trade and Importation into Africa of Firearms, Ammunition, and Spiritous Liquors". The date is drawn from the fact that Butler moved to Wimbledon after her husband's death in 1890 and to Wandsworth after her son's marriage in 1893.
