Cet article de Bérard occupe les pages 538-549 de ce volume (qui commence à l'article Sabine et s'achève à l'article Submersion) et qui fait partie de la seconde édition du Dictionnaire de Médecine (1832-1846). Le procédé opératoire et ses variantes selon les auteurs sont bien exposés. On trouve in fine une courte bibliographie (7 auteurs cités, dont bien sûr Roux, Stephenson, von Graefe et Dieffenbach). Auguste Bérard (1802-1846) fut professeur de clinique chirurgicale à la Faculté de médecine de Paris, médecin consultant de Louis-Philippe, membre de l'Académie de médecine. Sa publication la plus célèbre est sa thèse de concours (1841) sur les Maladies de la glande parotide et de la région parotidienne. Opérations que ces maladies réclament (Garrison & Morton, 3444). Bérard est cité 13 fois dans The Zeis index. Il avait déjà fait paraître un mémoire sur la staphylorraphie dans les Archives générales de médecine en 1834 (Zeis index, 1553).

Edition originale fort rare de la thèse de concours de Bérard. Elle sera rééditée chez Germer-Baillière, la même année, sous un titre légèrement différent (texte sans changement en dehors des 2 premiers feuillets) ; cette édition commerciale est un peu moins rare. Cet ouvrage manque aux grandes bibliothèques médicales (Waller, Osler, Cushing, Norman). Il constitue le premier traité complet sur le sujet. Bérard propose une classification des tumeurs, rapporte 52 observations et expose sa technique opératoire, permettant un bon contrôle de l'hémostase, à une époque où l'ablation de la parotide relevait de l'exploit. La seule complication importante reconnue par Bérard reste la blessure du nerf facial. Auguste Bérard (1802-1846) fit ses études de médecine à Paris, fut reçu premier à l'internat des hôpitaux de Paris, agrégé de chirurgie à 27 ans, puis nommé en 1842 professeur de clinique chirurgicale à la Pitié. Tracede pli transversaleinhérenteà l'envoi. * Renoir rédige cett…e missive au diplomate et banquier Paul Bérard, l'une des figures les plus importantes de sa carrière de peintre, commanditaire de pas moins d'une dizaine de toiles, avec qui il entretiendra une correspondance sur plusieurs décennies. C'est chez cet ami intime, dans le château de Wargemont non loin de Dieppe. que Renoir peint un nombre de ses chefs-d'uvre, célèbres paysages et portraits des membres de la famille Bérard ("quelques un de ses portraits les plus vivants et les plus insolites" Anne Distel), leurs cousins, et même leur concierge. Trois ans plus tôt, le peintre avait voyagé sur les traces des peintres hollandais avec Bérard, en compagnie de Claude Monet et du marchand Durand-Ruel. A l'écriture de cette lettre, Renoir fait séjour Sud de la France, afin de soulager ses rhumatismes qui l'ont finalement poussé, dans la dernière partie de sa vie, à explorer avec brio le médium de la sculpture. Il mentionne le Grand Hôtel des Colonies et des Négociants à Cannes, qu'il fréquentait souvent lors de ces déplacements dans la région. Il pourrait s'agir d'une lettre du printemps 1901 - par sa correspondance avec Durand-Ruel, il est connu que Renoir a effectivement séjourné dans cet hôtel cannois à cette date. One and a half pages in black ink on a bifolium. Horizontal fold mark inherent to mailing. * Renoir writes this letter to the diplomat and banker Paul Bérard, one of the most significant figures in his career who commissioned no fewer than ten paintings. They maintained a correspondence spanning several decades. At Bérard's residence, the château de Wargemont near Dieppe, Renoir painted a number of his masterpieces: celebrated landscapes and portraits of the Bérard family ("some of his liveliest and most unsual portraits" Anne Distel), as well as their cousins, and even their butler. Three years earlier, the painter had traveled in the footsteps of the Dutch masters with Bérard, accompanied by Claude Monet and the art dealer Durand-Ruel. At the time of writing this letter, Renoir was staying in the South of France to relieve his rheumatism, which eventually led him in the later part of his life to brilliantly explore the medium of sculpture.
