Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. large folio. engraved title by G.I.B.Scotin after Bérain & 28 engraved plates drawn & engraved by Bérain, Chauveau & Le Moine. 19th century half morocco (extremities worn, spine with a few scars, paper lightly embrowned, most plates with some foxing - 12 significantly so, all plates mounted on stubs). The title is dated 1710 but this is a later issue on thick wove paper. The plates show the wall and ceiling ornaments of Galerie d'Apollon in the Louvre drawn and engraved by Bérain (11), and those for doors and wall paneling of Louis XIV's apartment in the Tuileries drawn and engraved by François Chauveau (13) and Jean Le Moine (4). Charles Le Brun, one of the twelve original members of the Académie de Peinture et Sculpture founded in 1648 and first painter to the King (1664) was in charge of the project, which was begun after a fire in 1661, when the space was restored and enlarged. "Le Brun's project for the Galerie d'Apollon is a triumph of mythological decoration, and one of his most powerful works. It also reveals the enduring influence of Poussin on Le Brun. The theme of Le Brun's decoration for the Galerie d'Apollon is Apollo, god of the sun, represented in the effects of light on the hours, months, seasons, elements, and hemispheres. Henry Jouin (1889) describes the magnificently worked out representation as a "poem to the aspects of nature." The greatest artists and sculptors of the time contributed to this decoration, under the direction of Le Brun. But despite the fact that work on the project extended over a period of twenty years, it was never completed. It was taken up again only in the nineteenth century by architect Félix Duban and painter Eugène Delacroix. Delacroix is responsible for the design of the center ceiling panel, which does not follow the original ideas of Le Brun." (Millard) Berlin Kat. 4037. Brunet I 1443. Millard 21.
