A complicated property dispute in Cumberland, fuelled by political enmity. Portland took out a case against Lowther and the Corporation of Carlisle accusing them of compromising his interests in the fishing grounds leased to the defendants. Portland lost and a pamplet war ensued.

The Peace with Ireland Council was founded in November 1920 by Lord Henry Cavendish Bentinck, following a meeting at the House of Commons by a group concerned at the deteriorating situation in Ireland following the introduction of the Black and Tans, and spurred on by the treatment of former MP Annan Bryce and his wife Violet. Among those involved were the historian Basil Williams, who acted as treasurer, and the suffragette Margaret Buckmaster (daughter of Lord Buckmaster) who served as honorary secretary. From the Sylvia and Robert Lynd papers. Among the handful of titles published by the organisation (including two by G. K. Chesterton) this is the scarcest: there is a copy in the NLI, but none in the BL, and the only copy on JISC at Senate House. 2 pp, 12mo. Single leaf of brittle and browned newspaper stock, with a little chipping and two closed tears, one of them (near the head) 3 cm long. Divided into two parts: '1. Leaders of the Anglican and Free Churches. / The following appeal for a change of policy towards Ireland, and such action as will lead towards a genuine peace, has been sent to the Prime Minister by prominent leaders of the Anglican and Free Churches.' (reprinted from The Times, 6 April 1921); and '2. The English Catholic Bishops. / The opinion of the English Bishops is similar, as the following letter from Cardinal Bourne will show.' A seven-line footnote enlarges on the letter's reference to 'a lamentable and fatal affray at Castleconnell' with a quotation from details of 'a letter from W. Harrison Cripps, a distinguished surgeon, and brother to Lord Parmoor', read in both Houses of Parliament.

1p., 8vo. On bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with closed tear along fold line of second leaf, which is blank other than the manuscript docketing: 'William Griffith Esq. | Captain | in the Association of the Town of Pwlhelly and it's [sic] neighbourhood'. The actual document, on the recto of the first leaf is a printed form completed in manuscript. The king's bold signature 'George R.' is at the top left, while the Duke's ('Portland') is appended 'By His Majesty's Command' at the end. The left-hand margin bears three seals: the bottom two blind-stamped and the top one in red wax under paper. At bottom left the text on the reverse of the second leaf is repeated. Griffith is constituted and appointed to be 'Captain in a Company of Infantry'. Portland was Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1783, and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, 1807-1809.

5pp ms. in a secretarial hand, signed 'Portland' & with additional docket title & two line note in a different hand, on six folio leaves, sewn. A very interesting letter from the Home Secretary, the 3rd Duke of Portland, to the keeper of Reading Gaol, regarding the treatment of two prisoners, Robert Oliphant, imprisoned for 'treasonous practices' and Lewis Du Boisson, 'detained as an Alien'. Robert Oliphant was a tailor and radical; an active member of the London Corresponding Society (serving as its treasurer), and later a member of the United movement which advocated the overthrow of government by means of a co-ordinated insurrection in England, Ireland and Scotland. He was arrested as part of the government infiltration of, and crackdown on, radical organisations. The LCS was outlawed on June 2nd, 1801, making Oliphant's membership a criminal offence. Although it is not clear when he was released, it appears that Oliphant continued to be involved with the United Englishmen in 1802 (see Radical Underworld: Prophets, Revolutionaries and Pornographers in London, by Iain McCalman.) Lewis Du Boisson is a mystery. We can find one reference to a Bartholomew De Boisson being imprisoned with Robert Oliphant in 1801, but the trail runs cold thereafter. Although they were imprisoned together and clearly knew one another, we cannot establish any political connection. Portland's directions are long and precise, containing, as per the MS. docket title, 'instructions for the care and regulation of the treatment' of the two prisoners. These include when they can converse, what their allowance should be, and with further instruction that any letters sent or received be reviewed. 'They may associate together during the day time and at their meals and they may be allowed to walk in some yard or other proper place in the prison during a certain time in the day, but, if the arrangement of the prison permits, they should be removed to separate rooms at nights and they must not be permitted to hold any intercourse or communication with any person either within or without the prison unless by the authority of one of His Majesty's principal secretaries of state. You may occasionally allow them the use of pen, ink and paper in your presence or in the presence of some confidential person appointed by you for that purpose taking care that the letters written by them as well as those which are addressed to them be submitted by you to one or more of the visiting magistrates. There is no objection to their being permitted to read such books as may be approved of by the visiting magistrate. The sum of 12/4 per week each (exclusive of a reasonable allowance for colas when necessary and for beds) will be allowed for their maintenance and they themselves may have the liberty to choose in what manner it shall be laid out, subject to such regulations and restrictions as the visiting magistrate may think fit to order, with the exception however, spirituous liquors unless expressly directed by the magistrate themselves.'
