Rear-Admiral Cyril Herbert Gordon Benson (1884-1974) was educated at Winchester and H.M.S. Britannia and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 March, 1906. He served in the First and Second World Wars, having been promoted to Rear Admiral in 1936. This unusual book of verse starts with an autobiographical poem and is followed by various poems which are largely concerned with his service in the two world wars, and with his views, as a retired naval officer, on trends in society since 1945. The poems reflect his deep admiration for the officers and men who served in minesweepers during the First World War, and of the merchant seamen who served in convoys during the Second World War. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the front board. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with a brief flat signed inscription by the author on the half-title page. There is no dustwrapper probably as issued. The cover has bumping to the spine ends and bumping and chipping to the corners. Inscribed and Signed by Author.
